"Convert image online" is one of the most common requests we hear, usually phrased as "png to jpg" or "webp to jpg". On the surface it sounds trivial: change the extension and move on. In practice the format you choose decides three things at once. It sets the file weight, which controls how fast your page loads and whether a marketplace even accepts the upload. It decides whether transparency survives or turns into an ugly white or black box. And it determines how much quality you lose every time the file is saved. Get it wrong and a crisp product shot becomes a blurry, oversized, or rejected file. JPG, PNG and WebP: what each format actually does

The three formats you will deal with 95% of the time are JPG (also written JPEG), PNG and WebP. They are built for different jobs, and the differences are concrete.

  • JPG uses lossy compression. It throws away detail the human eye barely notices and packs photographs into small files. A 4000x3000 photo that is 18 MB as a raw export can drop to 1.5-2.5 MB as a quality-90 JPG. The trade-off: JPG has no transparency, and every re-save degrades the image a little more. It is the right choice for photographs with smooth gradients and lots of color.
  • PNG uses lossless compression. Nothing is discarded, so a saved-and-resaved PNG looks identical forever. It supports a full alpha channel, meaning real transparency with soft edges. The cost is weight: that same product photo as a PNG can be 8-15 MB, five to ten times heavier than JPG. PNG shines for logos, icons, screenshots, text, flat graphics, and any cutout that needs a transparent background.
  • WebP is the modern in-between. It offers both lossy and lossless modes, supports transparency like PNG, and is typically 25-35% smaller than a comparable JPG and far smaller than PNG. A WebP cutout with transparency can be a third the size of the PNG version at the same visual quality.

A quick rule of thumb on weight for a typical 2000px product image: JPG around 300-600 KB, WebP around 200-400 KB, PNG around 1.5-4 MB. The catch with WebP is compatibility. Modern browsers handle it perfectly, but some older software, email clients, and a few marketplace upload forms still reject it, which is exactly why "webp to jpg" is such a frequent search. If your photo has no transparency and needs broad compatibility, JPG is safest. If it needs a transparent background, PNG or WebP. If it lives on a website you control, WebP saves the most bandwidth.

Quality loss: what happens every time you convert

The biggest misunderstanding about converting images is that conversion is free. It is not. Whether you lose quality depends entirely on the direction you are going.

  • PNG to JPG: you go from lossless to lossy, so some detail is discarded the moment you save. At quality 85-95 the loss is invisible for most photos, and you gain a much smaller file. This is almost always worth it for photographs. The one thing you lose for good is transparency, which gets filled with a solid background color (usually white).
  • JPG to PNG: this does not recover quality. People assume turning a JPG into a PNG "upgrades" it. It does not. The detail JPG already threw away is gone; PNG just locks in the current state at a much larger file size. You end up with a heavier file that looks exactly the same. Only do this when you specifically need PNG features like transparency.
  • WebP to JPG: if the WebP was lossy, you are re-compressing an already-compressed image, so a little extra softening creeps in. Keep quality at 90+ to minimize it. If the WebP was lossless, the JPG step introduces the first real loss.
  • Re-saving the same JPG repeatedly: this is the silent killer. Each save adds compression artifacts, blocky squares around edges, and color banding in skies and gradients. Open, edit, save, repeat five times and the damage is visible.

Practical advice we follow in the studio: keep one master file in a lossless or high-quality format (PNG or a quality-100 JPG straight from the camera or editor), and export working copies from that master each time. Never edit the export of an export. When you do convert, set JPG quality to 90 for product shots and 80-85 only when file size is critical. Transparency: the one feature that trips everyone up

Transparency is where format choice gets emotional, because the failure is so visible. You cut a product out of its background, save it, drop it onto a colored page, and suddenly there is a white rectangle around it. Here is exactly why that happens and how to avoid it.

Transparency lives in something called the alpha channel. Only PNG and WebP carry it. JPG has no alpha channel at all, so the instant you save a transparent image as JPG, every transparent pixel is filled with a solid color, white by default. There is no setting to fix this; the format simply cannot store "see-through". So the rule is simple: if you need a transparent background, never save as JPG. Use PNG for maximum compatibility or WebP for smaller files.

Common transparency mistakes we see:

  • Exporting a cutout as JPG and wondering where the white box came from. The format ate the transparency.
  • Saving an 8-bit PNG when you need 24-bit. Indexed PNG-8 limits you to 256 colors and gives jagged, hard transparency edges. For product cutouts always use PNG-24 (or PNG-32 with alpha) for smooth edges.
  • Assuming a marketplace wants a transparent background when it actually requires a pure white one. Amazon main images, for example, demand solid white, not transparency.

Every marketplace has its own format and size rules, and uploads get rejected or downranked when you ignore them. Here is what each platform actually expects, based on the listings we prepare.

  • Amazon: accepts JPEG (preferred), TIFF, PNG and non-animated GIF. The main image must be a real product on a pure white background (RGB 255,255,255), no transparency, no props, no text. Recommended longest side is at least 1600 px to enable zoom; 1000 px is the practical minimum. JPEG at quality 90 is the safe default. WebP is not accepted, so "webp to jpg" is a required step if your files are WebP.
  • Etsy: accepts JPG, PNG and GIF. It recommends at least 2000 px on the shortest side and a max file size around 1 MB per image after Etsy processes it, though it accepts larger uploads. PNG is allowed and useful for graphics or transparent-edge listings, but for photographs JPG keeps you under the size ceiling more easily. WebP is not supported on upload.
  • eBay: accepts JPEG, PNG, GIF, BMP and TIFF. Minimum 500 px on the longest side, with 1600 px recommended for zoom. eBay strips backgrounds it dislikes and prefers clean white. JPG is the standard choice here too.

The pattern is clear: JPG is the universal safe format for marketplace uploads, white background is the norm for main images, and WebP is great for your own storefront but rejected by Amazon, Etsy and eBay upload forms. Converting for print versus web

Print and web pull in opposite directions, and a file optimized for one is usually wrong for the other. Web images should be small and fast, so they use compressed formats, sRGB color, and modest resolution sized to how they will be displayed. Print images should be large and rich, so they use high resolution, minimal compression, and sometimes a color profile suited to the printer. Sending a tiny web JPG to a printer produces a blurry, pixelated result, while uploading a huge print file to a website slows the page to a crawl.

Keep the two workflows separate:

  • Web: JPG or WebP, sRGB, sized to display dimensions, quality tuned for speed.
  • Print: high quality JPG or TIFF, full resolution, no aggressive compression, at the resolution your print provider specifies.

The safest habit is to always convert outward from a full quality master. Keep the original high resolution file, and generate a web copy for online use and a print copy for physical output as separate exports. Never resize a web copy back up hoping to print it, because the detail that compression threw away cannot be recovered. The trap to avoid is repeated lossy saving. Every time you re save a JPG, it compresses again and quality erodes a little more, so a file edited and saved a dozen times looks noticeably worse than the first save. The rule that protects you is simple. Keep a lossless or original master, do all your edits on that, and export a fresh lossy copy only at the end. That way the compression happens once, from the best possible source, and your working file never accumulates damage.
