How much detail belongs on each layer

The blur radius is the single dial that decides the split, and getting it right is a judgment call. Set it too small and coarse texture stays stuck on the low layer, so when you smooth color you still smear some detail. Set it too large and fine tonal transitions climb onto the high layer, which makes them impossible to fix without touching texture. The reliable method is to zoom to 100 percent, open the Gaussian Blur dialog, and slowly raise the radius while watching the preview: stop the instant the specific problem you want to fix, a blotch, a color patch, a scratch, disappears into softness while the shapes around it stay readable. Step by step: building the two layers

1. Prep the file

Open your image and do any global corrections first: crop, straighten, set white balance, and fix overall exposure. 2. Build the low frequency layer

3. Build the high frequency layer with Apply Image

Make the High layer visible and select it. Go to Image, Apply Image. In the dialog, set the Layer to your Low layer. Then match your settings to your file's bit depth:

  • 8-bit files: set Blending to Subtract, Scale to 2, Offset to 128.
  • 16-bit files: set Blending to Add, check Invert, Scale to 2, Offset to 0.

Click OK. The High layer turns mostly gray with faint detail. Now change the High layer's blend mode to Linear Light. Instantly your image looks normal again, but now the color lives on Low and the detail lives on High.

4. Test the split

Toggle the High layer off and on. With it off you should see a soft, blurry image. With it on, full sharpness returns. That confirms the separation worked. If turning High on makes the image look too contrasty or haloed, your radius or Apply Image settings do not match. Redo the Low blur and the Apply Image step with matching numbers.

Set the Clone Stamp to Sample: Current Layer so it only pulls from the high layer and does not accidentally grab color from below. 8. Troubleshooting a bad split

If the reassembled image does not look identical to the original, something is off. The most common causes: the blur radius on the low layer does not match the scale value in Apply Image, the high layer is not set to Linear Light, or you used the 8-bit recipe on a 16-bit file. Rebuild the two layers from scratch with matching numbers rather than trying to patch a broken stack. Another giveaway is a faint dark or light halo along high-contrast edges, which means the radius was too large for the content. Drop the radius and redo the split. A correctly built stack, toggled on and off, shows no color shift, no halo, and no contrast change when the high layer is hidden versus visible; it simply goes from soft to sharp.

Three-frequency separation

Standard separation splits an image into two bands. Three-frequency separation adds a middle band for mid-size transitions, the ones that are too big to be texture but too small to be broad color.
