Add black flags

Control camera and product position
Because the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection, moving the camera, tilting the product, or shifting the light by ten or fifteen degrees decides whether a highlight lands on a visible face or slides off it. Diagnosing a bad reflection before you retouch
When a test frame looks wrong, name the fault before you fix it. A tiny bright dot means the source is too small, enlarge it or bring it closer. A jagged, colored streak means an uncontrolled part of the room is reflected, add a flag or change the angle. Bright field: the go to setup for clear glass
The main technique for transparent glass is a light source placed behind the product, shining through a white translucent background. The object itself is lit mostly by transmitted and reflected light, while its contours are drawn as dark lines along the edges. This scheme is called bright field, and it produces a clean white background with crisp edges, which is exactly what Amazon and Walmart want for a main image.
Step by step:
- Place the product in front of a white translucent background: milky acrylic, diffusion film or parchment stretched on a frame.
- Behind that background put a large, powerful source, a softbox or a window. The light must pass through the background and illuminate it evenly.
- Add a soft fill from the front sides through a diffuser to lift the shadows on the near face.
- Set black flags at the sides of the product. They draw the dark contour lines on the edges. Without them the glass melts into the white background and loses all form.
- Under the item, place a light or mirrored base depending on the category and the reflection you want beneath.
Dark field for a premium look
For upscale presentation such as wine glasses, fine fragrance or crystal, use the reverse scheme, dark field. The principle is the same backlight, but the background is made black and the edges of the glass are drawn as bright white lines. A printed or foil label wants a small, controlled reflection to stay legible, so add a soft front source aimed to graze the label without blowing out the glass around it. A repeatable glass workflow

Polished metal is essentially a mirror. Everything in front of it is reflected with full sharpness. Cross-polarization, the advanced method
Use this when you need to kill every last highlight and leave a clean matte metal surface with no reflection at all. It suits strict catalog work: a knife, a spoon, a tool or a part lying on a white background.
- Place a sheet of polarizing film in front of each light source. It is sold in sheets, separate from the circular filter that goes on your lens.
- Fit a circular polarizer, a CPL, on the camera lens.
- Rotate the filter on the lens until the highlights on the metal go out completely. There is usually a clear point where the reflection simply vanishes.
- The surface becomes uniformly matte, with no reflections or hot spots, showing only the material and its texture.
The downside: crossed polarization costs you roughly two to three stops of light, so you need powerful strobes or a noticeably longer shutter speed on a tripod.
Tent lighting for fast throughput
The product goes inside a light tent or light box, surrounded on all sides by white fabric, and the light strikes through the walls. Polished metal then reflects only smooth, even white from every direction, so the surface looks clean with no stray objects in the reflections. Brushed versus polished, and jewelry crossover
Brushed or satin metal has a directional grain that behaves halfway between matte and mirror. Polished metal, by contrast, wants either the total control of a tent or the deliberate single highlight of controlled reflection. A repeatable metal workflow
Decide first which of the three looks you want: dead matte (cross-polarization), clean even white (tent), or a shaped highlight (controlled reflection). Build that one setup, lock exposure and white balance against a gray card, and shoot the whole group of similar pieces before changing anything. Wipe each item and blow off dust immediately before its frame, because chrome shows fingerprints the instant you touch it. Keep the color temperature warm for gold and neutral for silver, and confirm it on screen against the real piece rather than trusting the camera. A mirror is the final boss of product photography. It reflects everything with maximum clarity, and unlike chrome a flat mirror does not blur the reflection, it shows the room exactly as it is. You cannot shoot a mirror head on, the camera will always land in frame. The work is built on the geometry of the angle and on deciding what you will show in the reflecting plane.
The 45 degree trick. Set the mirror at a slight tilt to the camera rather than dead flat. The camera then reflects off to the side instead of into the lens, and the mirror plane shows a clean background or ceiling that you have draped in white or gray in advance. Stage the reflection. A mirror will reflect something, so direct what that something is. The route is: flatten the background to clean white, remove dust and prints with the healing brush, work individual reflections with masks, then add or clean up the shaping highlights so the form reads. The retouching order that saves time
Work in a fixed sequence and you avoid redoing steps. First flatten and whiten the background, because it defines the edge you will refine. Third, address reflections that survived the shoot: paint a smooth gradient over a problem zone on a masked layer, or clone a clean patch of the same surface, keeping the transition soft so no hard seam gives the retouch away.
