Layers in Photoshop: Types, Blend Modes, Masks and Smart Objects

From the pixel layer to the smart object: the panel, blend modes, masks and the real retouching moves we use on listings every day.

Why retouching is impossible without layers

Layers are the foundation of everything you do in Photoshop. Understand layers and you control the whole image: you can undo an edit at any moment, recolor the background, sharpen only where it matters, and build a complex scene from a dozen elements without destroying the original. Miss them, and every retouch turns into a lottery where each mouse move is irreversible.

Picture a stack of transparent sheets laid one over another. On the bottom sits the background, on the next the product, on a third the shadow, on a fourth a price caption. You look down and see one picture, but physically it is four independent layers. You can pull out any sheet, repaint it, change its order or brightness, and the rest are untouched. That simple idea gives you the main advantage of professional editing, nondestructive work. You do not edit the original shot directly, you stack corrections on top of it that can be switched off, dialed down or deleted at any time. For product photography this is critical: a listing is almost never approved on the first pass. The client asks for a lighter background, a bigger logo, a highlight removed from the packaging. If all the retouching lives on one flattened layer, every change is a rebuild from scratch. If the work is split across layers, the change takes thirty seconds. This guide walks through it all in order, with numbers, hotkeys and examples aimed at listings for Amazon, eBay and Etsy.

Layer types, from pixel to smart object

Photoshop has several fundamentally different layer types. They look similar in the panel but behave differently and solve different tasks. Understanding the differences saves hours of work.

Pixel (raster) layer

The basic, most common type. Made of ordinary pixels, points with a color and transparency. When you open a photograph, it lands as a pixel layer. The brush, clone stamp, healing brush, fill and filters all work on it. Its main drawback is that it is destructive: erase a pixel and it is gone, enlarge a small image and it turns to mush. So serious retouching runs not directly on the original pixel layer but on copies above it.

Background layer

A special pixel layer that Photoshop creates when you open a JPEG. It is locked, has no transparency and always sits at the very bottom. To turn it into a normal layer, double click it and press OK, or click the lock icon. The first thing most retouchers do is unlock or immediately duplicate it with Ctrl+J to keep an untouched original at the bottom.

Type layer

Created with the Type tool (T). It stores the text itself in vector form, so it scales without quality loss and stays editable, you can rewrite a word, change the font, size or color. For a listing, type layers are indispensable: price, discount, SKU, key selling points. While a layer is still text, most pixel filters will not apply, Photoshop offers to rasterize it first, but do that only as a last resort, because once rasterized the text can no longer be edited.

Adjustment layer

One of the most important types for retouching. It is not pixels but an instruction that changes the look of every layer below it: Curves, Levels, Hue/Saturation, Color Balance, Brightness/Contrast, Black and White and others. An adjustment layer destroys nothing, it sits on top as a filter and can be switched off or retuned by double clicking at any time. Every adjustment layer comes with a mask so the correction can be applied to only part of the frame. In practice product work leans on three: Curves for overall brightness, contrast and white balance per RGB channel; Levels for a quick black and white point so the background becomes truly white 255,255,255 as Amazon requires; and Hue/Saturation to lift or calm a specific color, for example when a red package reads as pale pink.

Fill layer

Fills an area with a solid color, gradient or pattern. It is a convenient way to lay down an even color you can change later without repainting. It is often used to swap a background on listings: drop a white fill layer, add a mask, and the product sits on the perfectly even white the marketplaces demand.

Shape layer

A vector layer with a geometric form, a rectangle, circle, line or custom path. It scales with no quality loss and has a fill and stroke. Useful for text plates, frames, discount badges and dividers in a listing infographic.

Smart object

A container holding one or more layers or an external file. It protects its contents from destruction: you can shrink, enlarge and rotate it as many times as you like and the source data inside stays intact. Filters applied to a smart object become smart filters you can switch off and retune. It is the cornerstone of nondestructive editing, and it gets its own section below.

Group (layer folder)

Technically not a layer but a container, a folder. It brings order once you have many layers. A group can take a shared opacity, blend mode and mask that affect all its contents at once.

The classic beginner mistakes: retouching straight on the background layer and losing the original, rasterizing text with no need, applying a correction as pixels through Image, Adjustments instead of as a reversible adjustment layer, and confusing a fill layer with a pixel layer filled by the bucket.

The Layers panel and blend modes

All layer work runs through the Layers panel. If you cannot see it, open Window, Layers or press F7. This is the retoucher's desk, and you should feel at home in it.

What the panel contains

  • The layer stack, where the top layer covers those below. The active layer is highlighted.
  • The eye icon toggles a layer's visibility. Alt clicking the eye leaves only that layer visible.
  • The thumbnail previews the contents, with a mask thumbnail beside it.
  • The blend mode dropdown at the top, Normal by default.
  • Opacity and Fill, two fields at the top right.
  • The lock icons and the bottom row of buttons: link, style, mask, adjustment layer, group, new layer, trash.

Core operations

New layer, Ctrl+Shift+N. Duplicate, Ctrl+J, the most common command in retouching. Delete, drag to the trash. Rename, double click the name, and naming layers sensibly (background, product, shadow, price) saves your nerves on complex files. Reorder by dragging or with Ctrl+] and Ctrl+[. Select several with Shift for a range or Ctrl for individual layers. Group into a folder with Ctrl+G, ungroup with Ctrl+Shift+G.

Opacity versus Fill

These two are confused most often. Opacity controls the transparency of the whole layer including its layer styles (shadow, stroke, glow). Fill controls only the transparency of the layer content, leaving the styles alone. In practice: if text has a stroke and you want the text itself semi transparent but the stroke solid, use Fill, not Opacity. In plain retouching without styles the two behave identically. A handy trick: with the Move tool (V) active, type a number to set the active layer opacity, 5 gives 50 percent, 0 returns 100.

Blend modes

A blend mode decides how a layer's pixels mathematically mix with what lies below. It is the most underrated and most powerful tool in Photoshop. There are more than twenty modes, but real product retouching uses five or six constantly.

  • Multiply darkens, and white disappears. The main use in product work is laying down shadows: shoot a shadow on white, drop it in as a Multiply layer, and the white vanishes, leaving only the soft shadow under the object.
  • Screen lightens, and black disappears. Used to add highlights, glow, or to lift an underexposed frame.
  • Overlay raises contrast and saturation, the base mode for adding texture and local contrast.
  • Soft Light is the same but gentler, the main working mode for careful dodge and burn on product photos where you need it to look natural.
  • Color takes the color of the top layer and the brightness of the one below, so you can recolor a product without losing its light and shadow.
  • Luminosity does the reverse, used so sharpening or contrast does not shift colors.

How to remember the groups instead of memorizing: the modes are split by thin lines. The top group darkens (white is invisible), the next lightens (black is invisible), and the contrast group (Overlay, Soft Light, Hard Light) makes 50 percent gray invisible, which is exactly what makes them ideal for dodge and burn. Learn those three rules and you stop guessing and start choosing the mode on purpose. A worked example: to return a natural contact shadow after cutting a product out, put a shadow on a Multiply layer, blur it 3 to 8 pixels with Gaussian Blur and lower opacity to 35 to 45 percent, so it anchors the product to the surface and kills the sticker look.

Modes to use with care

Color Burn and Color Dodge give a rich, punchy result but easily push colors past the printable range and tear smooth gradients apart. On a listing image compressed to JPEG, that shows up as dirty banding (posterization) on even surfaces like a glossy bottle. If you want a soft result, stay with Multiply and Screen, and reserve the aggressive burn and dodge modes for local use through a mask at a reduced opacity of 20 to 40 percent. The same caution applies to Vivid Light and Linear Burn, which are powerful but unforgiving on the smooth tones product photography is full of.

Combining mode with opacity

A blend mode sets the character of the mix; opacity sets its strength. The two are meant to work together. Very often the right answer is the correct mode at 60 to 70 percent opacity rather than the same mode at full force, which can look heavy. To find a mode fast, select the Move tool (V) and cycle through the list with Shift plus and Shift minus, watching the image update live, so choosing a mode takes seconds instead of opening the dropdown repeatedly. Building this habit means you reach for blend modes as a precise instrument, dialing character with the mode and intensity with opacity, rather than accepting whatever the default gives you.

Masks, clipping masks and smart objects

This is the heart of professional work. Once you master masks and smart objects, you stop fearing edits, because no action is final anymore.

Layer mask

A layer mask is a black and white transparency map attached to a layer. The rule is simple: black hides, white shows, gray makes it semi transparent. A mask does not delete pixels, it only conceals them, so you can bring hidden pixels back at any time by painting the mask white again. Select the layer, click the mask icon at the bottom of the panel, then paint with a black brush over the areas you want to hide, for example the stray background around a product. Made a mistake and hid too much? Switch the brush to white (press X to swap) and paint it back. This is fundamentally better than the eraser, which deletes pixels forever. On listings, the mask is the main way to separate the item from the background: cut the object out, remove the white with a mask, and drop a colored fill layer underneath.

Turning a selection into a mask

Usually you build a mask from a selection rather than by hand. Roughly select the product with Quick Selection (W) or Select, Subject, which finds edges automatically. Open Select and Mask to refine the edge, use the Refine Edge brush on the hard zones (fur, clear glass, wisps), and let the Smooth, Feather and Shift Edge sliders clean the border. In the Output field choose Layer Mask and press OK. For marketplaces the edge must be clean with no light halo from the old background. If a halo remains, shift the edge minus 1 to 3 pixels inward to eat the fringe.

Vector mask

Besides the ordinary raster mask there is a vector mask, defined by a path with the Pen, giving perfectly smooth crisp edges at any scale. It suits objects with clean geometric edges: boxes, phones, bottles, electronics. On straight lines and smooth curves a hand pen path gives a noticeably cleaner edge than any automatic selection, so professionals cut expensive electronics and jarred cosmetics with the pen.

Clipping mask

A clipping mask is often confused with a layer mask but is different. It forces the top layer to appear only within the opaque pixels of the layer below, which acts as a stencil. Place the stencil layer (a product silhouette or text), place the layer to constrain above it, hover the border between them, hold Alt and click, or press Ctrl+Alt+G. The top layer is clipped to the one below. In product work this inserts a wood texture inside a caption, recolors only the product without touching the background, or applies an adjustment layer to exactly one object. An adjustment layer set as a clipping mask is the standard move for applying color correction to the product only.

Smart objects and nondestructive editing

A smart object solves the main pain of pixel graphics, quality loss on transforms. Shrink a normal layer to 20 percent then back to 100 and it turns mushy, the pixels were thrown away. A smart object stores the source inside, so it scales back and forth with no loss. Create one with a right click, Convert to Smart Object. Any filter applied to it becomes a smart filter you can retune. Its biggest payoff on volume is the template: build one listing with the right background, shadow and plates, make the product slot a smart object, then for each new product right click, Replace Contents, point to a new file, and the listing rebuilds in ten seconds with the same light, shadow and grid. For a line of 30 to 40 similar items that is the difference between a day of work and an hour.

Theory is dead without practice. Here are the two main product retouching techniques that rest entirely on layers, plus a worked listing workflow and a hotkey cheat sheet.

Frequency separation

Frequency separation splits an image into two layers: low frequency (color, volume, smooth tonal transitions) and high frequency (texture, fine detail, pores, scratches). The point is to edit color and texture separately so you do not destroy one while retouching the other. Duplicate the product layer twice, name the lower copy Low and the upper High. Apply Gaussian Blur to Low until the texture disappears but the form remains (for product work usually 4 to 12 pixels). Select High, open Image, Apply Image, choose Low, mode Subtract, Scale 2, Offset 128 for 8 bit files. Set High to blend mode Linear Light. Now color lives on the lower layer and texture on the upper. On Low you smooth color patches with a soft brush or stamp, on High you remove scratches, dust and packaging defects with the stamp without touching color. The result is a clean, even product surface with the natural texture preserved, no plastic look. Note when it is worth it: on a small product that occupies 600 to 800 pixels in the listing, the difference is barely visible, and the healing brush (J) and stamp (S) directly on a duplicate are faster.

Dodge and burn

Dodge and burn hand sculpts light and shadow, removing blotches and emphasizing volume. The nondestructive way is a separate gray layer: create a new layer (Ctrl+Shift+N), choose mode Soft Light and check Fill with neutral color (50 percent gray), which is invisible in Soft Light. Take a soft white brush at 5 to 10 percent opacity and lighten hollows, highlights and bright edges. With a black brush darken excess hot spots and even the tone. Overdid it? Paint back with 50 percent gray and start again. On product work this removes streaks on gloss, evens light on matte surfaces and adds appetizing volume to packaging that lifts click through.

Replacing and whitening the background for marketplaces

Amazon and Walmart want a clean, usually white background. Through layers this is clean and reversible: duplicate the original (Ctrl+J), cut the product out with a mask, put a white fill layer underneath and set the color 255,255,255. If a dark or light halo shows along the edge, add a Levels adjustment layer as a clipping mask on the product only and pull the edges in. Do not forget the shadow: a clean cut product with no shadow looks stuck on, so add a soft shadow on a Multiply layer at 30 to 50 percent opacity. The full listing workflow

  1. Open the source, duplicate the background layer (Ctrl+J), leave the original at the bottom.
  2. Select the product, cut it out with a mask, drop a white fill layer underneath.
  3. Spot clean defects with the healing brush and stamp on the duplicate.
  4. Where needed, split frequencies and refine texture.
  5. Sculpt volume with dodge and burn on a gray Soft Light layer.
  6. Tune color and brightness with Curves and Hue/Saturation adjustment layers.
  7. Add a soft shadow under the product on Multiply.
  8. Add type layers and price plates on top.
  9. Save the PSD, export a JPEG at quality 80 to 90 to the platform's size.

Key hotkeys: Ctrl+J duplicate, Ctrl+Shift+N new layer, Ctrl+G group, Ctrl+E merge down, Ctrl+Shift+Alt+E stamp all visible into a new layer, Ctrl+Alt+G clipping mask, X swap brush colors, Shift plus or minus to cycle blend modes.

Why can't I edit the background layer with the lock icon? The Background layer is locked by default, so it cannot move or become transparent. Double click it and press OK, or click the lock, to turn it into a normal layer. Better still, duplicate it with Ctrl+J and work on the copy, leaving the original untouched at the bottom.

Why is a layer mask better than the eraser? The eraser deletes pixels permanently. A layer mask deletes nothing, it hides with black and restores with white, so you can repaint it at any time and bring back what you concealed. Always use a mask for retouching and cutouts.

What is the difference between Opacity and Fill? Opacity fades the whole layer including its styles like shadow and stroke. Fill changes only the content transparency, leaving styles intact. Without styles they behave the same.

What is a smart object and why use it? A smart object stores a layer's source data unchanged, so you can scale, rotate and transform any number of times without quality loss, and its filters become retunable smart filters. It is the basis of nondestructive editing and of listing templates where only the product changes.

Which blend mode do I use for shadows? Multiply. It darkens the layers below and makes white invisible. Shoot or paint the shadow on white, place it over the product, set Multiply, and only a soft semi transparent shadow remains. Control strength with opacity around 30 to 50 percent.

How do I recolor a product but keep its highlights? Create a new layer, fill the area with the target color and set blend mode Color. It replaces only the hue, keeping the original brightness and shading. Constrain it to the product with a clipping mask or a layer mask.

How do I merge layers but keep the originals editable? Do not flatten with Ctrl+Shift+E. Use Ctrl+Shift+Alt+E, which stamps a copy of all visible layers into a new top layer while leaving the originals below untouched.

Why did a layer get blurry after I shrank and enlarged it? A normal pixel layer throws pixels away when shrunk, so enlarging has nothing to rebuild from. Convert the layer to a smart object before transforming, and the source is preserved for lossless scaling.

How do I make a pure white background for Amazon? Cut the product out with a layer mask, put a fill layer of 255,255,255 underneath, check the edge for a halo and shift it 1 to 3 pixels inward if needed, and add a soft Multiply shadow so the item does not look stuck on.

How many layers can one file hold? Practically thousands, limited only by RAM and file size. Group into folders and name layers sensibly to keep the file fast and manageable, and delete what you do not need.
