How the blending happens

Because the tool works with the real colors in your photo rather than a single foreground color, a stroke across the seam between a bright highlight and a mid gray leaves a smooth gradient where the seam used to be. Mixer Brush vs the Smudge tool

The Smudge tool also pushes pixels around, so beginners often reach for it instead. The difference matters. Smudge simply shoves pixels in the drag direction, and on any surface with texture it quickly produces smeary, wormy artifacts, the classic melted plastic look. The Mixer Brush blends color while respecting the loaded bristle color, so it keeps transitions cleaner and lets you introduce a fresh tone at the same time. When to choose it

Reach for the Mixer Brush whenever the job is a smooth transition: softening the ramp between highlight and shadow on a curved surface, cleaning a gradient background that shows banding, evening out a stretch of skin, or blending brushstrokes in a digital painting. It is the wrong tool for removing a discrete object, cloning a clean patch over a logo, or fixing a hard edge that must stay hard. Match the tool to the task and it becomes one of the most useful items in the retouching kit; use it everywhere and you will smear detail you meant to keep.

A note on color spaces

The Mixer Brush needs a paintable, full color document. If the tool looks grayed out or refuses to blend, check that you are in RGB or CMYK mode, not Grayscale or Indexed Color, and that the active layer is a normal pixel layer rather than a Smart Object, a type layer or a locked layer. Every Setting in the Options Bar, Explained

The load swatch and Load Brush / Clean Brush

At the far left of the options bar sits a color swatch with a small dropdown. This represents the color currently on your bristles. The dropdown gives you two commands: Load Brush fills the bristles with the current foreground color, and Clean Brush empties them so the brush carries no color of its own and only blends what it finds on the canvas. For most retouching you want a clean or self sampled brush so you are blending real image color, not injecting a foreign tone.

Load the brush from the image with Alt / Option

The most important habit: hold Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac) and click a spot on the photo to load the brush with the color sampled from that exact area. Now when you stroke a nearby patch, you are blending with a tone that already belongs in the picture, which keeps everything natural. Re sampling as you move across different tonal zones is the secret to clean, believable results.

Right after the swatch are two small brush icons that toggle on and off. Load Brush After Each Stroke refills the bristles with sampled color at the end of every stroke. Clean Brush After Each Stroke empties them after every stroke instead. For smoothing skin and gradients, turning Clean After Each Stroke on is often the safest choice, because it stops the brush from dragging a color halfway across the face and depositing it where it does not belong. If your results look dirty or muddy, an over eager Load After Stroke is usually the culprit.

The preset menu (Dry, Moist, Wet, Very Wet)

Next comes a dropdown of ready combinations like Dry, Moist, Wet and Very Wet, plus Custom. Picking one sets the Wet and Mix sliders to a sensible pair. Dry means no blending at all, essentially a regular brush. Very Wet means heavy, soupy blending. These are handy starting points, but for real control you will adjust the individual sliders below.

Wet

Wet controls how much color the brush pulls off the canvas, in other words how wet the canvas is. High Wet values create long, smeary, blended strokes; low Wet keeps the stroke crisp and the blending subtle. For skin, keep Wet low, around 10 to 20 percent, so you nudge tones together without turning the face to plastic. For an aggressive gradient smooth on a background you might push it to 40 to 60 percent.

Load

Load sets how much paint the brush carries and therefore how long a stroke lasts before it runs dry. High Load leaves color for a long drag; low Load fades quickly. For skin, a Load of 20 to 30 percent keeps blending controllable and prevents a single tone from smearing across the whole cheek.

Mix

Mix governs the ratio between the color already on the image and the color on your bristles. At 100 percent the brush uses almost entirely the canvas color, giving pure blending; lower values let more of the loaded bristle color show through. For gentle skin work keep Mix low, around 10 to 25 percent, so you are mostly averaging existing tones rather than painting new ones on.

Flow and Sample All Layers

Flow is the intensity of application per pass, exactly as with the regular brush: lower Flow builds the effect gradually across several strokes, which is far safer than one heavy pass. Keep Flow around 20 to 50 percent for skin so you can sneak up on the result. Finally, Sample All Layers is the checkbox that lets the Mixer Brush read pixels from every visible layer while painting onto a separate empty layer above. Brush shape and hardness

Under the brush preset picker, choose a soft round brush with Hardness at 0 percent. A hard edge leaves visible borders where one stroke meets the next, which defeats the whole purpose. Dodge and burn versus the Mixer Brush

Step one: prepare the file

Open the portrait and check the resolution is high enough to hold skin detail after editing. Do your basic cleanup of individual blemishes first with the Healing Brush or Clone Stamp, because the Mixer Brush is for evening out tone across an area, not for removing a single spot. With the obvious marks gone, you are ready to smooth what remains.

Step two: make a separate retouch layer

Create a new empty layer with Ctrl+Shift+N (Windows) or Cmd+Shift+N (Mac) and keep it above the image. You will paint the smoothing onto this layer only, so the original pixels below are never altered.

Step three: enable Sample All Layers

With the Mixer Brush active and the empty layer selected, tick Sample All Layers in the options bar. This is the crucial switch. It tells the brush to read color from the photo underneath while depositing the blended result onto your empty layer. Without it, the brush finds nothing to sample on the blank layer and does nothing.

Step four: dial in gentle settings

For skin, low and slow wins. A good starting point: a soft round brush at 0 percent hardness, Wet 10 to 20 percent, Load 20 to 30 percent, Mix 10 to 25 percent, Flow 20 to 50 percent, and Clean Brush After Each Stroke turned on. These modest values let you build the effect over several passes instead of destroying detail in one. If in doubt, go lower; you can always stroke again.

Step five: work with the skin, not against it

Size the brush a little smaller than the area you are smoothing. Alt or Option click to load a clean skin tone from right beside the trouble spot, then make short strokes that follow the natural contours of the face, along the cheekbone, down the jaw, across the forehead. Do not scrub back and forth over one spot; that is what creates mush. Work a patch, lift off, sample again, move on. The goal is to nudge a red or uneven area into agreement with its neighbors while leaving the fine texture of the skin visible.

Step six: preserve pores and control the result

Because you are on a separate layer, you have two safety nets. First, if a region looks too smooth, lower the opacity of the retouch layer until real texture shows through again, often 50 to 70 percent looks most natural. Second, add a layer mask and paint black to hide the smoothing exactly where you overdid it, for instance to bring back detail on the nose, lips and around the eyes, which should stay crisp. Never smooth the eyes, nostrils or lip edges; those anchor the face and must stay sharp.

Step seven: judge it at the right zoom

Retouchers ruin skin by working at 300 percent zoom, where every pore looks like a crater. Zoom back to fit the screen regularly to see the face as a viewer will. If the skin reads as even and healthy at normal size while keeping its texture up close, you are done. If it looks like a wax figure, reduce the layer opacity or mask more back. When you are certain, you can flatten with Ctrl+E or Cmd+E, though keeping the layer separate until the very end is wiser. Painted metal, leather and glossy surfaces

A ring, a watch case, a leather wallet or a painted metal panel often shows tiny dents, scratches or uneven reflections that pull the eye away from a clean product. To smooth a stretch of painted metal, choose a soft round brush a touch smaller than the flaw, Alt or Option click a clean area of the surface to load that exact tone, then blend across the imperfection with Wet around 30 to 50 percent and Load around 30 to 50 percent. The reflections merge into a smooth sheen. On glossy surfaces, use a smaller brush and a slightly higher Flow to keep the crisp highlight from muddying, and if the metal loses its shine you can add a Curves or Levels adjustment afterward to restore contrast. Fabric and cloth

Fabric shows two problems: uneven color across a garment and a distracting weave that looks noisy at small sizes. Load a clean patch of the fabric color and run light strokes along the direction of the weave, not across it, so any surviving texture still reads as cloth rather than blur. Keep Mix low so you are averaging the fabric's own tones and not introducing a foreign color. The aim is a garment that looks evenly lit and clean while still obviously being fabric. Over smooth it and the shirt turns into a flat colored shape that looks fake in a listing.

Smoothing a gradient background

The most common product background problem is banding, visible steps in a gradient behind the item, especially after heavy compression. The Mixer Brush erases them beautifully. Work on a copy of the background, pick a large soft brush, set Wet and Mix moderately high (say 50 percent each), Alt or Option click a clean part of the gradient, and stroke across the bands following the direction the gradient flows, from light to dark. The steps dissolve into a seamless ramp. Keep the product itself protected with a selection or a layer mask so you only smooth the background.
