Shadow

  • Form shadow on the product itself, which draws its volume. You do not want to remove this completely, or the item goes flat and cardboard-like.

Reflection

Mirror and glass surfaces reflect the whole environment: the camera, you, the window, the ceiling, cables, the coffee mug at the edge of the table. Metal and glass work like mirrors, so here you control not only the light but what sits in front of the product, in the zone that reflects. The angle of reflection equals the angle of incidence, so to predict what lands in the frame, mentally draw a ray from the lens to the surface and out again at the same angle, then remove anything on that path.

Remember the pairing: hard, small light gives crisp shadows and pinpoint glare, large soft light gives smooth transitions. Ninety percent of product work is managing the size and direction of the source. The remaining ten percent is controlling what reflects in the mirror-like faces.

How to diagnose a defect in seconds

Before you change anything, ask three questions about the frame and you will immediately know what you are fighting:

  • A bright pinpoint spot on gloss? That is glare from a small source. Cured by enlarging and softening the light, or with a polarizer.
  • A black well with a hard edge under the item? That is a hard cast shadow. Cured by lighting the background, adding a reflector, or shooting on a glass riser.

Bigger and closer means softer

A softbox, a white sheet in front of the lamp, or shooting by a big window on an overcast day all give diffused light with no hard edges. Direct sun and a bare bulb do the opposite, painting black shadows and blown highlights. If you shoot by a window, hang tracing paper or sheer fabric over it as a diffuser. White balance and exposure

Even perfectly placed light is ruined by a dirty white balance. A warm lamp turns a white background yellow, and then you have to drag it back in editing at the cost of quality. Shoot against a gray card or at least a white sheet, keep every source at the same color temperature (do not mix cool daylight from the window with a warm lamp), and do not blow out the highlights. Better to underexpose slightly and lift brightness later than to lose texture in a burned highlight forever.

Budget kit versus expensive gear

Lock the tripod, mark the product and light positions with tape, write down the camera settings and do not change them between shots. Polarizers and Tenting for Gloss, Glass and Jewelry

When the product is glossy or mirror-like, one soft light is not enough. Two tools come into play: a polarizing filter and smart diffusion. For different surfaces the balance between them shifts, and it pays to keep that in mind.

The polarizer (CPL) against glare

A circular polarizing filter screws onto the lens and cancels specular reflections from non-metal surfaces: glass, plastic, water, lacquer, ceramic. Rotate the filter and you watch the glare literally melt in the viewfinder. It works across a range from zero to maximum effect, so turn it slowly and catch the position where the reflection fades and the texture comes through.

  • It kills glare best when the light hits the surface at roughly 30 to 40 degrees. With flat frontal light the effect is minimal.
  • On bare metal a CPL works weakly, because metal reflects polarized and unpolarized light the same way. Here the fix is not the filter but control of what reflects, meaning diffusion of the environment.

Mirror surfaces: controlling the reflection

There is no universal recipe: a glossy bottle, a matte box and a chrome faucet each need a different strategy. A short summary of where to start:

  • Matte plastic, fabric, cardboard: one soft source plus a reflector. Watch for volume and texture, glare is barely an issue.
