TIPS FOR JEWELRY PHOTOGRAPHY
Photographing jewelry requires high precision and attention to detail, especially when dealing with reflective or shiny surfaces such as gold and silver. Here are some key aspects and tips for professional retouching of jewelry photos:
Cleaning the Pieces Before Shooting
Before starting the shoot, it’s important to carefully clean each piece of jewelry to avoid visible dust, fingerprints, and other contaminants in the photos. Even particles that are invisible to the eye can become noticeable in high-quality shots.
Use of a Lightbox
To minimize unwanted glares and reflections, it is recommended to use a lightbox. This structure, made of light-diffusing material, evenly distributes light around the jewelry, eliminating harsh shadows and mirror-like reflections. This is especially important for objects with reflective surfaces.
Lighting Control
Light sources should be positioned in a way that provides indirect lighting for the pieces, which is key to achieving the right image quality. Diffused light helps avoid harsh shadows and overly bright glares, which is crucial when photographing shiny objects.
Background Preparation
Choosing the right background also plays an important role in retouching. Solid-colored backgrounds made of paper or fabric are often used, as they don't create distracting details and help focus attention on the jewelry itself. This helps emphasize the details and quality of the pieces.
Tips for Creating High-Quality Photos of Jewelry and Other Reflective Objects
To create jewelry photos that are ready for professional retouching and further use in advertising and sales materials, several key principles should be followed. These tips will help you achieve a high level of quality and aesthetic appeal in your images.
1. Use of a Lightbox
Principle of a Lightbox:
A lightbox (which can also be oval) creates a special space around the object that's being photographed, enclosed by a frame covered with light-diffusing material.
The design allows for even light distribution, avoiding harsh shadows and mirror-like reflections, which is especially important when working with chrome surfaces.
Light sources are placed outside the box, providing indirect lighting.
2. Proper Lighting Setup
Main Recommendations:
Use of diffused light.
Utilize softboxes or an additional layer of fabric to soften the light.
3 .Special Stands for Securing Objects
The Need for Stands:
The stands should be stable and allow the object to be fixed at the desired height and angle.
This ensures visual consistency in the photos, which is important for product catalogs and advertising materials.
4. Choosing the Camera and Lenses
Technical Specifications:
Use cameras with high resolution.
Opt for lenses with low distortion.
Macro lenses are suitable for close-up shots of details.
Wide-angle lenses should be used carefully to avoid distortion of objects.
5.Background Control
Creating a Suitable Background:
To achieve a clean and professional image, the background should be uniform.
Use different types of paper or fabric that don’t create distracting details and help focus attention on the object.
6.Cleanliness of the Workspace and Objects Being Photographed
Important Measures:
Clean the workspace to perfection, as dust will immediately settle on the items.
Clean the object being photographed, even if no dirt is visible to the naked eye.
7.Practical Tips for Creating a Lightbox
Preparing the Lightbox:
A lightbox can be made by yourself using white fabric or paper.
It is important to create a structure that will evenly diffuse the light.
Conclusion
Professional photography of jewelry and other reflective objects requires not only technical skills and knowledge of lighting techniques but also the ability to choose the right equipment and accessories. By following these tips, you will be able to create photos that meet high standards of quality and aesthetics.
In jewelry macro photography, depth of field is measured in fractions of a millimeter. The larger the magnification and the wider the aperture, the narrower the zone of sharpness. At the aperture that delivers real detail, only a thin slice of the piece falls into focus: the crown of the stone but not the pavilion, the top of the setting but not the shank, the near prong but not the far clasp. Capturing a ring, pendant or earring fully sharp in a single frame is physically impossible. That is why professional jewelry photography always means focus stacking.
The obvious idea, closing the aperture to f/22 to get everything sharp, does not work. Past f/11 to f/16 diffraction kicks in: light bends around the aperture blades and the whole frame softens, losing the very facet detail the shot exists for. The optical sweet spot of most macro lenses sits around f/8 to f/11. Beyond that, sharpness drops instead of rising. The only way to get both detail and depth is to shoot a series at the working aperture and merge it.
Camera on a tripod or focus rail, the piece locked in place, the light constant. We shoot a series, smoothly shifting the plane of focus in micro-steps from the nearest point to the farthest: front facet, table of the stone, crown, setting, shank, clasp. A focus rail, including a motorized one, gives a precise repeatable step, and we shoot tethered to a computer to control every frame. The step is set so the zones of sharpness of neighboring frames overlap by 20 to 30 percent, otherwise the merge shows bands of softness.
The number of frames depends on the piece: a simple ring is 10 to 15 shots, a ring with a high crown, a multi-stone necklace or an openwork brooch can need 30 to 60 and more, over 20 frames per angle. The light stays still throughout, often with polarization on the sources and lens to kill stray glare on metal and glass and keep the facets readable.
The series is assembled into one fully sharp frame in dedicated software: Helicon Focus (depth-map and pyramid methods), Zerene Stacker (PMax and DMap algorithms) or via Auto-Align and Auto-Blend Layers in Photoshop. The program takes the sharpest areas from each layer and blends them. But automation never gives a clean result on jewelry.
The seams of a stack reveal characteristic defects: light halos around high-contrast facets, doubling of thin prongs and rims, ragged jagged edges on sharp borders, ghosts from highlights that shifted slightly between frames. This is the work people pay for. The retoucher combines several merge variants, manually masks the problem zones, swaps in areas from individual source frames, removes halos and restores clean facet geometry. Without this finishing, stacking always gives itself away.
Rings with a high crown and prong setting, pieces with scattered small stones, bracelets and chains, long earrings, openwork and filigree, anything with a large depth range. If a competitor shoots with stacking and you shoot a single frame, your listing will always have a soft half, and the buyer leaves for the sharper photo.
There is no universal way to process a stone. A diamond, an emerald and a pearl live by different optical laws, and a trick that flatters one ruins another. So in our work each stone is masked separately and led with its own curve, its own highlights, its own color balance. Here is how we handle the main groups.
The value of a diamond is in the play of facets and scintillation, the alternation of black and white flashes inside the stone. We raise local contrast between these reflections through curves on the stone mask, remove grayness and haze, and draw the facet edges with Dodge and Burn. A fine line: too much sharpening turns a diamond into dirty glass. The task is honest fire, not a fake star painted over half the stone.
The inclusions in an emerald, its garden, are a sign of authenticity, not a flaw. They must not be cleaned out completely or the stone looks synthetic and loses trust. We hold a rich deep green, fix dullness and a grayish veil through saturation and curves in the right color channel, and carefully raise clarity while keeping the character of the stone.
Here everything comes down to depth and purity of color. A ruby must not drift into crimson or brick, a sapphire into ink or violet. We control the blowout on the dome, especially on cabochons where a highlight easily burns the whole top of the stone, keep the silk effect and smooth tonal transitions, and even out color zoning.
A pearl is valued for its luster, its pearly inner glow and soft overtones, the pink and green sheen on the surface. Harsh contrast and sharpening kill it, turning it into a plastic bead. We work gently: keeping the depth of the glow and the gradient, cleaning only real defects, evening out the tone of pearls on a strand without touching the structure of the shine itself.
With an opal the main thing is play-of-color, the multicolored flashes that must not be over-saturated, or the noble play turns acidic. Turquoise needs an even matte tone without patches; amethyst, topaz, citrine and garnet need their zoning and clarity. Each mineral is led separately to bring out exactly its nature.
Cubic zirconia, moissanite, glass, crystals and enamel are handled honestly: we reveal their own beauty and shine but do not pass them off as precious stones. The listing must show the product as it really is, otherwise returns grow and the seller rating drops.
Metal in a frame is first of all reflections. It is the clean, correctly built reflection that separates expensive photography from amateur work: in a good shot metal reads as metal, not as a gray or yellow blob. Yellow gold, white gold, silver and platinum need different color and tonal work, and they cannot be mixed.
We keep a warm, clean, noble yellow. The main mistakes are drifting into green or into dirty orange when raising saturation. We neutralize stray color reflections from the surroundings, build a smooth gradient from the bright highlight to the warm shadow, and clean softbox reflections so they emphasize volume rather than fight it.
A rhodium-plated surface is cold and neutral. It must not be made blue or warm. It needs clean even highlights, a neutral gray-white tone and an accurate gradient over the volume. Any color cast instantly reads as cheap costume jewelry, so the white balance on this metal is set separately from the stones.
Here lives a coppery, pink undertone. The task is to keep exactly the pink character and not burn it into orange. It is a capricious adjustment: one step right on saturation and noble rose gold becomes cheap copper.
Silver catches yellowness, patina, darkening and any stray tints from the surroundings. We bring it to a clean neutral, remove tarnish and oxidation spots, and restore mirror finish and clean reflections without losing volume and texture.
Platinum is a deep neutral gray, restrained nobility without the yellow nuance of gold and without the bright mirror of silver. We convey its dense tone and surface character, visually separating it from white gold, with which it is often confused.
Mirror polish, satin, matting, diamond cut and sandblasting render differently, each texture with its own pattern of highlight and transition. Engraving, blackening, oxidation and enamel are led so as to keep the relief and contrast of the pattern, not blur them into a flat patch.
AI and presets remove the routine and keep the price down, but the final quality of jewelry is always delivered by a live retoucher working in layers. At 200 to 400 percent magnification everything the preview hides comes out, and this is where it is decided whether the listing looks like ten thousand or like one hundred.
Dust, lint, fingerprints, traces of glue and polishing paste, micro-scratches on metal, chips and bubbles in enamel. At macro every speck of dust becomes a boulder, so the cleanup runs across the whole frame with the clone and healing tools on separate layers, keeping the original intact.
We straighten skewed settings, restore the symmetry of the crown, prongs and links, and fix tilted facets and uneven rims with transform and liquify tools. The piece must look perfectly assembled, even if the real sample has manufacturing tolerances.
With Dodge and Burn we paint and refine highlights by hand, draw the facet edges and metal ridges, tame burning blowouts from softboxes, and add clarity and inner depth to the stone. This is the manual light-and-shadow work that no automatic filter reproduces.
We balance the color of metal and stones separately, remove color reflections, and set a natural contact shadow and a neat reflection on the surface. Final sharpening is applied through a mask only where it is needed, on the stone, while on smooth metal noise is removed instead. The result is a clean, expensive, selling listing ready to upload.
One perfect photo is half the job. For a catalog to sell, every listing must be in a single style: the same clean background to the platform requirements, a single angle and scale, consistent and repeatable color rendering of metal and stones from item to item. We bring the whole range to this standard, from a wedding ring to a necklace and a watch.
A clean background to the requirements of Amazon, Etsy and eBay, the correct format and cropping, color correction, deep defect retouching, a natural shadow, focus stacking for complex pieces, and on request selling infographics and benefit cards for each category.
The hybrid of AI and manual retouching gives the best balance of speed, price and quality: we do the rough processing of the whole catalog in hours, while a retoucher finishes each listing by hand. Send a few photos and we will quote by volume and turnaround.
Single hero images for a campaign usually come back within a day. For catalogues we agree a daily throughput rather than one distant deadline, typically a rolling 24 to 48 hour cycle per delivered batch, so your listings go live progressively instead of waiting on the last ring. Deep retouching of a large faceted stone takes noticeably longer per frame than a silver stud, and we say which items are the slow ones when we quote. If you shoot collections seasonally, book a week ahead and we hold capacity for you.
Jewelry grade work starts from $4 per photo and rises with the depth of retouching required. Cleaning dust, evening out the metal and placing the piece on white sits at the lower end. Rebuilding facet structure inside a stone, removing softbox reflections from a mirror polished band, or blending a focus stack from many frames is priced individually. Send a typical set and we quote per image before starting. For repeat catalogue work we agree a fixed rate per position, so your cost per SKU is known in advance.
RAW is better for jewelry. Metal highlights and stone brilliance live at the extremes of the tonal range, and RAW keeps recoverable detail there that a JPEG has already discarded. If you shot a focus stack, send the whole sequence unmerged and let us align and blend it. We return retouched files as high resolution TIFF or JPEG for print, web sized JPEG or PNG for listings, and transparent PNG when the piece needs to be isolated. Layered PSD is available if your own designers take the files further.
Colour is the most common correction request and it is included. Yellow gold in particular shifts between devices, so tell us early whether you judge on a calibrated monitor, a phone, or a printed proof, and give us a reference: an approved earlier image, a specified colour value, or a plain description of the true shade. If an emerald reads too blue or a rose gold too pink, we adjust and resend. Should a whole batch drift because we misread the reference, we redo it at our cost.
Shoot on a clean, non reflective surface with controlled light, and keep the piece tack sharp somewhere in every frame. For rings and bracelets a focus stack of several frames beats one shot at a very small aperture, since diffraction softens exactly the detail buyers zoom into. Keep the sensor and the stones clean: dust on a dark background costs retouching time that you pay for. Also note which items are worn display samples whose scratches must be removed, and which are production pieces that must stay honest.
Yes. Send two or three pieces that represent the hardest part of your range, usually a faceted stone, a mirror polished band and something with a fine chain. We retouch them free of charge so you can compare the result against your current supplier on your own screens. Unreleased collections are treated as confidential: nothing is published as a sample without written consent, and we sign your NDA. Once the test is approved we lock a written style guide so the rest of the catalogue matches without you re-explaining.
