How to Remove the Background from a Photo on iPhone: in Photos, in Safari and on a New Background

The built-in way: how to remove a background on iPhone in the Photos app

You can remove the background from a photo on iPhone without installing a single app: open the picture in Photos, touch the main subject and hold your finger there until a shiny white outline runs along its edge. After that the subject can be copied, sent or saved as a sticker, already without its background. This works on iPhone XS, iPhone XR and newer models running iOS 16 or later.

The built-in method has its limits: the iPhone decides for itself what counts as the subject, does not let you correct the edge and does not always hand you an ordinary file. That is why this guide has four parts: the standard iOS feature, an online tool in Safari, putting the cutout on a new background, and a look at the cases where the cutout comes out messy.

How to remove a background on iPhone: the short answer

The fastest route is this: Photos, the picture you need in full screen, a long touch on the subject, then Copy or Share. The iPhone separates a person, an animal, an object or a building from the rest of the frame and gives you only that.

If what you need is an actual file with a transparent background, one that will later go into a product listing, a presentation or a layout, an online tool is more convenient: it gives you a PNG rather than the contents of the clipboard. You can try it right on this page, the widget is below.

  • Send the cutout into a chat or a note: a long touch in Photos is enough.
  • Get a PNG with a transparent background: the Preview app on recent iOS or the online tool.
  • Put the subject on a different background: a sticker and Markup in Photos, or an AI background replacement.
  • A difficult edge (hair, fur, a chain): the online tool with a separate mode for fine details, plus a properly shot photo.

How to cut out the background of a photo on iPhone with a long press

In Apple's help pages this feature is described as lifting a subject from the photo background. The steps are as follows:

  1. Open the photo in full screen. A video works too: pause it on the frame you need.
  2. Touch the subject and hold it. An outline appears around the subject.
  3. Lift your finger. A menu pops up above the subject.
  4. Choose an action: Copy, Look Up, Add Sticker or Share.

There is a second trick that skips the menu: while still holding the subject with one finger, use another finger to open the app you need and drag the subject straight into a document, an email or a note.

The set of menu items depends on the system version. The iOS 16 guide describes only Copy and Share. Stickers, working with a video frame and dragging are described in the guides starting with iOS 17. If one of the items is missing on your phone, it is the version and not a fault.

You do not need to move your finger around: just hold it calmly and let go. The outline, in Apple's wording, "may appear", so its absence does not yet mean the subject was not selected: watch whether the menu popped up.

How to copy a subject without the background and paste it into another app

After Copy, the subject sits in the clipboard. Open an email, a message or a note, touch the text field and choose Paste. According to Apple's help, a copied subject can be pasted into an email, a text message or a note.

The Share item opens the usual share sheet: AirDrop, Messages, Mail and the other apps you have installed. This way the cutout can be sent straight to your computer or to a colleague.

An important caveat from Apple itself: you cannot paste a copied subject onto another photo. So the scheme "copied a person, opened another picture, pasted" will not work in Photos. There is a workaround through a sticker for that, covered in the third section.

How to save a cutout as a sticker

In the menu that appears after the long touch, choose Add Sticker. The subject goes into your sticker collection, which opens from the onscreen keyboard and from the Markup tools. Right after saving, the Add Effect command is available: Apple's guide names the Outline and Comic effects.

A sticker is handy because it lasts: the clipboard is overwritten by the very next thing you copy, while the sticker stays. According to Apple's help, stickers sync through iCloud and are available on your other devices signed in to the same account.

There is one downside: a sticker is not a file. You cannot upload it to a classifieds site or into a product listing builder. Tasks like that call for a PNG.

Remove a background on iPhone in Safari, in Messages and from a video

The same gesture works outside the photo library too. The iPhone User Guide names Photos, Safari and Quick Look, and an Apple Support article adds Messages: a picture sent to you in a conversation can be cut out without saving it first. In Safari the menu item has a different name: Copy Subject. Hold the picture on the page, wait for the menu and choose it.

With video the trick is the same: pause on a good frame, then long touch the subject. This saves the day when the person blinked in the photo but the clip has a good moment.

In third-party apps the gesture may not be supported: there a long touch is often taken by the app's own menu. In that case save the picture to Photos and do the cutout there.

Remove the background from a photo on iPhone in the Preview app

iOS 26 and later include the Preview app, and according to the iPhone User Guide it has a separate Remove Background command. Open the image in Preview, tap the actions button above the image and choose Remove Background. Apple adds a condition: the item is shown only when the app has found a subject in the picture, for example a person, an animal or an object. No item means the subject was not recognized.

The main difference from the long touch: the result stays a file. Tap the button next to the file name and choose Export: the guide lists the HEIC, JPEG, PDF, PNG and TIFF formats. For a transparent background choose PNG and leave the Alpha option switched on: according to the guide, turning it off "flattens" the transparency, in other words removes it. JPEG cannot store transparency at all, so instead of empty space you get a solid fill.

It is also convenient because you see the whole result at once: the subject on an empty field rather than in a small pop-up menu. If the edge was cut badly, bring everything back with the Undo command from the same menu and try a different picture.

If your iPhone does not have this app, the system version is older. The guides for earlier iOS versions do not have this section. A system update or the online tool solves the problem.

Which iPhones support background removal

According to Apple Support, lifting a subject from a photo is available in iOS 16 and later on iPhone XS, iPhone XR and later models. That includes the second and third generation iPhone SE as well.

Two practical conclusions follow. On iPhone X, iPhone 8 and older models the feature does not exist, even if the system is updated to the latest version available for them. And on a suitable model with an old iOS it is enough to update the system.

Checking is simple: open any picture with a clearly defined object and hold your finger on it. If the outline did not appear on any of several photos, most likely the model or the version does not qualify. In that case the browser method remains, and it does not depend on the model.

What format does the iPhone save a cutout in

Apple does not name a format in its help pages, and that is no accident: when you copy, you get not a file but an object in the clipboard. What comes out of it depends on the app you paste it into. A note or an email usually keeps the transparent edges, while a messenger may recompress the picture in its own way and put a background under it.

So the rule is simple. If you need to show the cutout in a conversation, copy and paste. If you need a file with guaranteed transparency, export a PNG from Preview or get a PNG from the online tool.

One more limitation of the built-in method is size. The subject is cut out at the resolution it had in the picture, and no enlargement takes place. A small figure in a wide shot will stay just as small.

Remove a background online in Safari: a transparent PNG with no apps

The online method does not depend on the iPhone model or the iOS version: all you need is a browser. You upload a picture to the page, a neural network on the server separates the subject, and you get an image without a background. There is no app to install and no account to create.

How to remove the background from a photo on iPhone online in Safari

Open the background remover in Safari or use the widget on this page, it works the same way.

  1. Tap the upload area and choose a picture from your photo library or from Files.
  2. Leave the "Universal" mode on or pick another one if the shot is a difficult one.
  3. Start processing and wait for the preview.
  4. Judge the result: is the subject intact, has a piece gone missing, is there a stray object left behind. The preview shows the subject on a light gray backing, so a light fringe on it is harder to see than a dark one.

One picture is processed at a time. If the edge came out untidy, try a different mode: the result often changes noticeably.

Remove background from photo

AI processing runs locally on our own hardware, no cloud, no subscription. It handles fine structures especially well: chains, hair, lacework, transparent stones. Output is a PNG with a transparent background.

    Processing your photo...
Tip: a single clearly defined object on a contrasting background cuts out best. Hair, fur and clear glass are harder, where an even background and good sharpness help.

Remove a photo background on iPhone online or with the built-in feature: the difference

The built-in gesture is faster when you need the result here and now: to paste into a note or send in a conversation. The online method wins in three cases.

      • The iPhone is older than iPhone XS and iPhone XR or the system is older than iOS 16: the standard feature simply is not there.
      • You need a file and not the contents of the clipboard: a PNG you can upload to a website or hand over to a designer.
      • The standard feature got it wrong and there is nothing to correct it with. In the tool you can switch the processing mode and compare.

There is a flip side worth knowing about in advance: the picture is sent to a server, and the processing happens there, not on the phone. For personal photos that you are not prepared to upload anywhere, stay with the built-in method.

Which photos the tool accepts and at what size

The tool accepts JPG, PNG and WebP files up to 25 MB. Each side of the picture must be no smaller than 100 and no larger than 8000 pixels. An ordinary shot from the iPhone camera fits within these limits.

Very large pictures are scaled down by the server before processing: the long side of the result does not exceed 4096 pixels. For a product listing, a classified ad or a small-format print that is more than enough.

There are four modes: "Universal", "Fine details (chains, lace)", "Portrait" and "High resolution". Start with the universal one and try the others when you see a specific problem: ragged hair, links stuck together, a small detail that got lost.

What to do with HEIC: why an iPhone photo may fail to upload

By default the iPhone shoots in the HEIC format, and the tool does not accept it: only JPG, PNG and WebP. In practice, when you choose a picture from the photo library, the browser usually hands the site a JPEG by itself and you notice nothing. A format error appears more often when the file is chosen through Files or arrived by email as HEIC.

      There are three solutions:

      • Choose the same picture from the photo library instead of from Files.
      • Convert the file to JPG. How to do that on a phone and on a computer is covered in the article on converting HEIC to JPG.
      • Switch the camera to shooting in JPEG: Settings, then Camera, Formats and the Most Compatible option. According to Apple's help, new photos are created in JPEG after that. Shots you have already taken stay in the previous format.

The third option is worth turning on only if you often send pictures to websites and programs that do not understand HEIC: JPEG files take up more space.

Remove a background for free without registration: what is included

No registration is needed at all. For free you get the processing itself and a preview: a reduced image of up to 900 pixels on the long side with the site's watermark. It shows clearly whether the neural network coped with your shot.

The clean full-size file is paid. There are five free runs per day from one address, and this count is shared with the site's other AI tools. Every change of mode on the same picture also counts as a run, and after the fifth one the tool does not start for free until the next day. So do not spend attempts cycling through identical shots: pick the best source picture first.

Processing usually does not take long, and takes longer when the server is busy. If you get a message that the service is busy, simply start it again a little later: that is a queue, not an error in your file.

How to get a PNG with a transparent background

The tool's final file is a PNG with a transparent background: in place of everything that surrounded the subject there is empty space. A file like that can be placed on any backing in an editor, a presentation or a product listing builder, and there will be no white rectangle around the subject.

Keep in mind that the preview is a JPEG on a light backing with the site's watermark, and there is no transparency in it. If you save it instead of the final file, you will get a picture with a light gray background. Transparency exists only in the clean PNG.

A more detailed look at the tool itself, its modes and typical tasks is in a separate piece on removing a background online. Here we stay within the iPhone.

How to remove the background on iPhone from a messenger photo or a screenshot

Technically it is the same as with any other picture: save the image to your photo library and upload it to the tool. But you should not expect the same quality. Messengers compress photos, and a screenshot is limited by the display resolution and often captures interface buttons.

If you can, ask for the original to be sent as a file or through AirDrop. A compressed picture has small square artifacts around the subject, and after the cutout they stay on the edge as a dirty fringe.

Crop a screenshot before uploading so that only the subject itself is left in the frame, without toolbars and captions: that makes it easier for the neural network to understand what matters.

How to save a picture without a background to Photos and Files

A file downloaded in Safari lands in the Downloads folder of the Files app. According to Apple's help, the path is this: Files, the Browse tab, the Downloads folder; if you cannot see it, open iCloud Drive first. A file you have just downloaded is quicker to open from Safari itself: the Downloads button next to the search field. From Files a PNG is easy to attach to emails and upload to websites, and there it definitely stays a PNG with transparency.

To make the picture appear in your photo library, open it in Files and use the Share button to save it to Photos.

A tip for the future: for work, keep the PNG in Files or in a cloud folder. The photo library is convenient for viewing, but when you send from it through messengers the picture is easily recompressed, and the transparency is lost.

Why a transparent background looks white or black in the gallery

Because transparency cannot be displayed: there is always something under the picture. The gallery puts the viewing screen's own background under the image. In the light appearance it is light, in the dark one it is dark, and in the viewing mode without buttons it is usually black.

That is where a common panic comes from: "I downloaded a PNG without a background and it has a white background". It is easy to check. Switch the phone's appearance or tap the picture to hide the toolbars. If the background around the subject changed together with the interface, it is transparent and everything is fine.

If the background stays white in any appearance, the file really is opaque. Most often that means it became a JPEG along the way: it was forwarded through a messenger, someone took a screenshot of it, or the preview was saved instead of the final file.

Do not want to fiddle with it? Hand the photo to a retoucher

Cut out and place on another background: white, new, plus screen color and blur

Cutting out the subject is half the job. Usually a new background is needed next: white for a classified ad, neutral for a profile picture, an interior for a product. On iPhone there are three working routes, from the simple one to the flexible one.

How to cut out a photo on iPhone and put it on a different background

The standard route goes through a sticker, because Apple does not support pasting a copied subject directly into another photo.

      1. Open the source picture in Photos, hold the subject and choose Add Sticker.
      2. Open the photo that will become the background and go to editing it.
      3. Turn on Markup, tap the add button in the Markup toolbar and choose Add Sticker.
      4. Drag the sticker onto the photo. The size is changed with the blue dots along the sticker's outline, the angle by rotating with two fingers.
      5. Save the result.

Stickers, going by Apple's guide, are described starting with iOS 17, and on iOS 16 this route does not exist.

The method is good for greeting cards and joke collages. For a product it is on the weak side: the sticker lies flat, without a shadow, and the light on the subject does not match the light on the background.

How to cut out a photo and paste it onto another background on iPhone without stickers

The second route: paste the copied subject somewhere that has layers. A note, a presentation or any graphics editor from the App Store that understands pasting from the clipboard will do. The order is always the same: first you place the background picture, then you paste the subject on top and move it around.

The third route: a PNG file from the online tool. Listing builders, editors with templates and classifieds services accept it, and the transparency lets you put anything underneath without tracing by hand.

Whichever route you choose, watch the scale: a subject cut out of a small picture will turn soft on a large background. Take a source photo where the object fills most of the frame.

How to make a white background for a classified ad or a product listing

The easiest way to get a white background is to replace the background rather than assemble it by hand. In the AI background replacement tool the ready-made options include white, dark, studio gray and beige, as well as textures: marble, wood, concrete. You can also describe the scene in your own words. The result arrives as a JPG.

If you already have a PNG with transparency, a white backing can be put together on the phone too: create a white image in any editor and place the subject on top using one of the methods above.

Mind the difference between the approaches. Background removal leaves the subject untouched and simply removes everything around it. AI replacement draws a new setting, including a shadow under the object, so it looks more natural but needs checking: make sure the product itself has not changed in the picture.

Photo requirements differ between marketplaces and they change, so check the size, the proportions and the permitted background in the rules of the specific marketplace before uploading. The general principle is the same: the object large in the frame, a background free of unrelated things, edges without a gray fringe.

How to put a new background in place of the old one

When you need a scene (a table, an interior, a street) rather than a white sheet, assembling it by hand almost always produces a fake: there is no shadow and the color of the light is different. A neural network handles this differently: it paints in the surroundings around the subject, taking its shape into account. How that works and which scene descriptions work best is covered in the article on replacing a background with AI.

An honest warning: a generated background is a picture, not a document. It is fine for a catalog and for social media, but passing it off as a real shoot in a place you have never been is not a good idea.

How to remove a white background on iPhone

Two different troubles hide behind this search. The first: the picture has a white background and it needs to become transparent. That is ordinary background removal by any method from the first two sections. A plain white background cuts out easily, as long as the object itself is not white.

The second: the screen of the phone or of an app has turned white and it is hard on the eyes. Then it is a matter of appearance. According to the iPhone User Guide, open Settings, then Display & Brightness and choose Dark instead of Light. The Automatic option is turned on in the same place: under its options you choose Sunset to Sunrise or a schedule of your own.

How to remove a black, dark or gray background on iPhone

If the whole interface has gone dark, it is switched off in the same place: Settings, Display & Brightness, the Light option. Check the Automatic option as well: with it the dark appearance comes on by itself in the evening. There is a quick switch in Control Center too: touch and hold the brightness slider and the Dark Mode button appears.

If pictures have also turned dark or look like negatives, look in Settings, Accessibility, Display & Text Size. That is where Smart Invert and Classic Invert are found. In Apple's description, the first inverts all colors except images, the second all colors on the screen, including photos.

A gray screen without color comes from the Color Filters item in the same menu, if the Grayscale filter is selected. A dull grayish white may be the result of the Reduce White Point option. All of these are screen settings: they do not affect the photo files themselves. And if the dark or gray background is in the picture itself, it is removed like any other: by cutting out the subject.

How to remove a yellow background on iPhone

A yellowish screen in the evenings is almost always Night Shift: the feature shifts the display colors toward the warm side. Open Settings, Display & Brightness, Night Shift. There you can turn off the Scheduled option, and the Color Temperature slider makes the tint cooler or warmer. A quick switch is in Control Center: touch and hold the brightness slider, then tap the Night Shift button.

Two more things change the tint of the screen. The True Tone feature, which Apple describes together with Night Shift as a way of adjusting the screen color automatically. And Color Filters under Accessibility, Display & Text Size: a filter can give the entire screen a tint of the chosen color. If the yellowness does not go away after you turn off Night Shift, check whether a color filter is switched on there.

Remember the main point: all of this changes only how the screen shows the picture. The photo itself stays the same, and on another device it will not be yellow. Before judging the color of a product or of skin in a photo, turn the warm mode off, otherwise you will start "treating" a healthy shot.

How to remove a blurred background on iPhone

A blurred background in a picture comes from Portrait mode, and it can be taken off after the shot. In the current version of Apple's guide the steps are these: open the portrait photo in Photos in full screen, tap the Portrait label in the top left corner of the screen and choose the option that turns Portrait off. In the iOS 18 guide the path is different: open the photo for editing, tap Portrait at the bottom of the screen, then Portrait at the top of the screen and Done; tapping again turns the effect back on. The background becomes as sharp as the camera recorded it.

If you want to soften the blur rather than remove it, open the photo for editing and drag the Depth Control slider at the bottom of the screen, then tap Done. A black dot on the slider marks the original strength of the effect, so it is easy to return to it. In older iOS versions the buttons are arranged differently, but the logic is the same: the portrait effect is stored separately from the photo and is switched off without any loss.

This works only for shots taken with the portrait effect. If the background was blurred by the lens or the photo came from a messenger, the sharpness of the background cannot be brought back. The background can, however, be replaced or, on the contrary, blurred more strongly: the techniques are collected in the article on blurring and replacing the background in a portrait.

How to remove a transparent background on iPhone

The opposite task comes up as well: a website does not accept a PNG with transparency, or the transparent areas show up black in an app. Then the transparency has to be replaced with a solid color.

The most reliable way is to place the subject on a backing of the right color using the methods from the start of this section and save the result. A quick option exists in the Preview app: when exporting, choose JPEG, or keep PNG but turn off the Alpha option. In both cases the empty areas are filled with a solid color. Which one exactly, Apple does not specify, so check the result with your own eyes.

When the background cuts out badly and how to shoot for a clean cutout

Both the iPhone's built-in feature and the neural network on the server make mistakes on the same kinds of scenes. The difference is that in the online tool you can change the mode, while in Photos all that is left is to reshoot. The good news: most errors are built in at the moment of shooting, and they can be avoided.

Why the iPhone does not select the subject in a photo

The outline does not appear when the system cannot tell what the main thing in the frame is. Typical reasons: the subject is small, cut off by the edge of the frame, shot in the dark or almost the same color as its surroundings. In pictures with several objects of equal weight the iPhone may select the wrong one.

The second group of reasons is technical: the model is older than iPhone XS and iPhone XR, the system is older than iOS 16, or the picture is open in an app where the gesture is not supported. Test it on a picture that is simple for certain, for example a mug on a table.

You cannot control the choice of subject in the standard feature: there is neither a brush nor an eraser. If the iPhone stubbornly grabs something extra, move on to another method or reshoot.

Why hair and fur cut out badly

Because they have no clear boundary. A strand thinner than a pixel is half made of background, and any algorithm is forced to decide whether to keep it or cut it off. As a result the hairstyle either gets an even "helmet" or glows with a fringe of the old background.

No method promises perfect edges on hair and fur, and we do not promise them either. Two things help noticeably: a background that contrasts with the hair in brightness, and a sharp source picture. In the online tool it is worth trying the "Portrait" mode for people and comparing it with the universal one.

If the photo is for a small profile picture, minor flaws on the strands are not visible in the end. For large prints the requirements are different, and here it makes more sense to shoot against a plain background from the start.

Why glass and transparent objects cut out with errors

The background shows through glass, and for the algorithm that is part of the background. A wine glass, a perfume bottle, eyeglasses or a clear gemstone either lose their middle or carry away a piece of the old surroundings, which looks like a dirty patch on the new backing.

Highlights and reflections add to the confusion: the algorithm may take a bright spot on the glass for a hole, and the reflection of the room for a part of the object.

This cannot be cured completely: a transparent object by definition shows what stands behind it. Shoot glass against the background it will be shown on, or against a neutral light one. Then even an imprecise mask will not catch the eye.

How to cut out a chain, lace and other fine details

Chain links, openwork knitting, bicycle spokes, mesh: everywhere there are many small gaps, and the background has to disappear in each of them. The iPhone's built-in feature often fills such gaps in completely.

The online tool has a separate mode for this, "Fine details (chains, lace)". It is not magic, but on jewelry and lace it usually gives neater gaps than the universal one. The third option, "High resolution", is worth trying on large, detailed shots.

Shooting matters more here than the mode: lay the chain out so that the links do not lie on top of each other, and photograph it close up. A small chain in a wide shot consists of a few pixels, and there is nothing left to cut out there.

What to do if the subject blends into the background

A white cup on a white table, a black jacket by a dark wall, a green toy on the grass: the boundary is not there in the picture itself, and there is nowhere to take it from. The result is predictable: the subject loses a side or a piece of the background grows onto it.

There is one solution, and it is not in the processing: reshoot against a different background. A sheet of colored card, a plain blanket or a wall of a different tone is enough. The rule is simple: shoot light things on dark, dark things on light, colored things on neutral.

What to do if a halo of the old background is left around the subject

A thin light or colored fringe along the outline appears when the edge of the subject is not sharp in the picture: the pixels on the boundary are mixed with the background, and part of that mix remains. On a white backing a halo from a light background is almost invisible, while on a dark one it catches the eye.

That gives a practical trick: choose a new background close in brightness to the old one. A subject shot by a light wall will sit most calmly on a light backing. If it is a dark background you need, shoot the object on a dark one.

The second trick: reduce the final picture. When it is scaled down, a fringe one or two pixels wide disappears by itself. For a profile picture or a product thumbnail that is enough.

How to remove the background of a photo on iPhone when it has people and stray objects in it

When there are passers-by in the background, the algorithm may count them as part of the main subject, especially if they are standing right up against it. In the standard iOS feature there is no way to influence this.

Cropping before processing helps: crop the picture so that only the person or object you need is left in it, with a small margin at the edges. The fewer candidates for the main role in the frame, the more accurate the choice.

If people in the background overlap the subject, background removal will not save it: the cutout silhouette will come with someone else's shoulder. A different picture is needed here.

How to take a shot so the background cuts out cleanly

A few habits when shooting save more time than any processing:

      • A plain, contrasting background. A wall, a curtain, a sheet of card. No patterns and no folds.
      • Distance from the background. Move the object or the person a step or two away from the wall: the shadow will stop clinging to the outline.
      • Even, soft light. By a window on an overcast day or in the shade. A hard shadow from the flash is often cut out together with the subject.
      • The whole subject in the frame. Do not crop the top of the head, the elbows or the edges of the product.
      • Sharpness. Wipe the lens and hold the phone still. A smeared edge cannot be cut out precisely.
      • A close shot. The object should fill most of the frame.

Take several shots from different distances. Choosing the best source picture is cheaper than spending processing attempts on a shot you already know is weak.

The ordinary Photo mode suits cutouts better than Portrait: artificial blur along the outline makes it hard to tell where the subject ends.

When it is better not to remove the background at all

There are pictures where it is more honest and quicker to leave the background as it is or to reshoot. These are shots with strong motion, noisy night photos, group pictures where people overlap each other, and any photos for documents: there you need not a cutout silhouette but compliance with the requirements of the issuing authority.

Do not expect a miracle from a small source picture either. Background removal does not add detail: if the object takes up a hundred pixels in the picture, the same number will remain afterwards.

In all other cases the working order is this: shoot with quality to spare, try the standard long touch, and if the edge is not good enough or you need a file, do the same in the online tool and judge the preview.

      Frequently asked questions

How do I remove the background from a photo on iPhone without apps? Open the picture in Photos, touch the subject and hold it until an outline appears, then choose Copy, Add Sticker or Share. The feature is available in iOS 16 and later on iPhone XS, iPhone XR and later models.

Which iPhones can remove a background with a long press? According to Apple Support, iPhone XS, iPhone XR and newer models running iOS 16 or later. iPhone X, iPhone 8 and older do not have this feature, and there an online tool in the browser will help.

Can I paste a cutout subject onto another photo? Not directly: Apple states that a copied subject cannot be pasted onto another photo. The workaround is to save the subject as a sticker and add it to the picture you need through Markup in Photos.

Why does a downloaded PNG without a background show a white or black background? The gallery shows transparent areas on its own backing, light or dark depending on the appearance. If the background around the subject changes when you switch the appearance, the file is transparent. If it is always white, it became a JPEG along the way or you saved the preview instead of the final PNG.

Does the online tool accept HEIC photos? No, only JPG, PNG and WebP up to 25 MB. When you choose a picture from the photo library, the browser usually hands over a JPEG by itself. If a format error appears, convert the file to JPG or turn on the Most Compatible format in the camera settings.

How much does it cost to remove a background online, and do I need to register? No registration is needed. Processing and the preview are free: that is an image reduced to 900 pixels with the site's watermark, five runs per day from one address, with the count shared with the other AI tools. The clean full-size PNG is paid.

How do I remove the blurred background from a photo taken in Portrait mode? Open the portrait photo in Photos in full screen, tap the Portrait label in the top left corner and choose the option that turns Portrait off. To only soften the blur, drag the Depth Control slider while editing. For ordinary pictures with a blurred background this will not work.

Why do hair and fur cut out untidily? Thin strands have no clear boundary with the background, so any algorithm either cuts them off or leaves a fringe. A plain contrasting background, a sharp picture and the "Portrait" mode in the online tool help, but you should not expect a perfect edge.
