How to Restore an Old Photo Online: A Practical Family Guide

Why old family photos are worth saving now
Most family archives are physical, and physical photos do not last forever. A color print from the 1980s has already shifted toward magenta or orange because the dyes break down faster than the paper. A black and white print from the 1950s is usually in better chemical shape but is covered in handling damage: corner cracks, surface scratches, fingerprints, and the white spots left where the emulsion flaked off. Once a print is gone, it is gone, so the single most valuable thing you can do is get a clean digital copy first and worry about repairs second. The good news is that a lot of restoration that used to need a professional with a graphics tablet can now be done online in a minute, and the part that genuinely needs human hands has gotten smaller. The five damage types, and what each one really is
Before you fix anything, name the damage. Different problems need different tools, and applying the wrong fix makes things worse. In our experience almost every old print has some mix of these five issues.
- Scratches and cracks. These are physical lines on the surface, usually white or light gray where the emulsion lifted. They are the easiest damage for automatic tools because the algorithm can see a thin bright line against a darker area and rebuild what should sit underneath.
- Fading and color shift. Color prints lose dye over time, and the cyan layer dies first, which is why old photos go orange or red. Faded black and white prints just look flat and gray, with no true black and no true white. This is a tone and color problem, not a content problem, so it responds extremely well to automatic correction.
- Blur and softness. Be honest about the cause. Camera shake and missed focus are baked into the original and cannot be invented back, although modern sharpening can recover a surprising amount. Scanning blur, by contrast, is your fault and is fixable by rescanning.
- Stains, water damage, and mold. Brown rings, yellow blotches, and silvering (a mirror-like sheen) are chemical. Light staining clears up with color correction. Heavy staining that hides facial detail is the hardest category and often crosses into manual work.
- Missing pieces. A torn corner, a missing eye, a chunk eaten by an album adhesive. There is no real information there, so the tool or the retoucher has to invent plausible content. This is where automation is least reliable.
The honest rule we work by: anything that is a uniform problem across the whole image (fading, color cast, low contrast, light scratches) is a great candidate to fix online. Anything that destroyed actual detail in a face is where you slow down. Sort your shoebox into those two piles before you touch a single file and you will save hours.
Digitizing a paper photo at home the right way
Restoration quality is capped by your scan quality. We see people run a soft, crooked phone snapshot through a tool, get a mediocre result, and blame the software. Garbage in, garbage out applies completely here. A flatbed scanner is the gold standard, and a careful phone capture is a solid backup.
- Scan at 600 DPI minimum for a standard 4x6 print, and 1200 DPI for small prints under 3 inches or anything you might want to enlarge or print again. 600 DPI on a 4x6 gives you roughly a 2400x3600 pixel file, which is plenty of detail for the algorithm to work with.
- Save as TIFF or maximum-quality JPEG. Avoid letting your scanner software auto-compress. If your scanner only outputs HEIC or you shot the photo on an iPhone, convert it first with our HEIC to JPG converter so every tool can read it.
- Turn off the scanner's auto-correction. Descreening, auto-sharpen, and auto-color on the scanner driver often bake in mistakes you cannot undo. Capture flat and clean, then correct in software where you can preview and reverse.
- Clean the print and the glass. A microfiber cloth and a soft brush remove loose dust. Every speck on the glass becomes a permanent spot in your scan that the tool then has to repair unnecessarily.
- Shooting with a phone? Use indirect daylight, lay the photo flat, hold the camera parallel and directly overhead, and avoid the flash, which causes glare and hotspots on glossy prints. Crop tight to the photo edges afterward with our crop tool.
One more step people skip: scan the back of the photo too if anything is written there. Names, dates, and places are part of the archive and worth more than the image to future family. A common mistake is scanning a whole album page with several photos in one pass. Scan each photo individually so the tool can analyze one face and one exposure instead of averaging across the page.
What automatic tools fix well, and what they cannot
This is the most important section, because managing expectations is half the job. Automatic restoration has gotten genuinely good, but it is not magic, and knowing the line keeps you from being disappointed or, worse, from accepting a fake-looking result.
What it handles very well, usually in one pass:
- Removing the orange or red color cast from faded color prints and rebuilding believable, natural tones.
- Restoring contrast so flat gray scans get real blacks and whites again.
- Erasing fine scratches, dust spots, and light surface cracks across open areas like sky, walls, and clothing.
- Reducing film grain and scanner noise without smearing detail.
- Mild sharpening that recovers softness from age or a slightly soft scan.

Where automation struggles or fails:
- Reconstructing a damaged face. If a scratch runs through an eye or a stain covers half a cheek, the tool guesses, and the guess often subtly changes who the person is. Family will notice instantly.
- Large missing areas. A torn-off corner or a missing arm has no source data, so anything generated there is invention, not restoration.
- Heavy water damage and mold that has eaten through detail rather than just discolored the surface.
- Severe motion blur, which no tool can truly undo because the information was never captured.
The classic mistake is over-processing. People run a face through aggressive sharpening and denoising until it turns into a plastic mask with no skin texture. Less is more. If the automatic result looks waxy or invented around a face, that is the signal to stop and consider a manual retoucher rather than pushing the sliders harder.
Colorization is the feature that makes families gasp, and it deserves its own honest explanation. When you colorize a black and white photo, the tool is not uncovering hidden color, because there never was any. It is predicting plausible color from the gray tones and from millions of reference images: skin reads as skin, grass reads as green, sky reads as blue. Get the order right. Always restore first, then colorize. If you colorize a scan that still has scratches and a heavy color cast, the tool tries to assign color to the damage too and the result looks blotchy. Clean it up, get clean grays, then add color.
Where colorization is reliable:
- Skin tones in good lighting.
- Natural elements: foliage, sky, water, wood, stone.
- General scene mood and warmth that makes a photo feel alive.
Where it guesses and may be wrong:
- Specific clothing colors. A dress the tool paints blue may have been red. If a family member remembers, that detail matters and only a manual retoucher can honor it accurately.
- Military uniforms, flags, team kits, and logos, which have correct colors that an automatic guess will not know.
- Distinctive eye and hair colors that are part of someone's identity.
Our advice: treat automatic colorization as a beautiful default, not a historical record. For most family photos it is exactly what people want and the emotional payoff is enormous. When accuracy to a real memory matters, keep the black and white original safe, and ask a retoucher to colorize specific elements to the colors the family actually remembers. A common mistake is deleting the original after colorizing. Never do that. The grayscale scan is the document; the colorized version is an interpretation, and you want to keep both.

Choose manual work when large pieces are physically missing and must be reconstructed by referencing other photos of the same person. Choose it for severe water, mold, or silvering damage where detail, not just color, has been destroyed. Choose it when several damaged photos need to be combined into one good frame, when a print must be color-accurate to a real memory, or when you are restoring a photo for a printed memorial, a large canvas, or a published family book where every flaw will show at size.
