How to make a signature or stamp transparent
- Sign or stamp a white sheet and photograph it with your phone, or take an existing scan. Upload a JPG, PNG or WebP file.
- If the picture shows anything besides the signature, draw a frame around it. With no frame the whole picture is processed.
- Check the result on the checkered backdrop: the checks mark transparent areas. The threshold is picked automatically and the Sensitivity slider changes it.
- If needed, adjust edge smoothing and speck cleanup and pick the ink color: as is, black, blue or your own.
- Click "Download PNG". The file is saved with a transparent background at the resolution of the original.
What the tool does
- Removes the paper and keeps the ink: the threshold is picked automatically and the result shows at once on a checkered backdrop.
- Works with black and colored pens and with blue stamps: ink is detected by both darkness and color saturation.
- Evens out lighting: the shadow of a hand or phone on the paper does not become a gray patch.
- Smooths the edge: ink fades into transparency gradually, with no jagged steps.
- Cleans up specks: stray dots and paper noise are removed with a slider.
- Keeps the ink color or recolors it to black, blue or any color you choose.
- Trims the result to the signature with a small margin. Trimming can be switched off.
- Gives you a transparent PNG at the resolution of the original, with no watermark.
Questions and answers
Is the file uploaded to a server?
No. The image is processed in your browser and is not sent to a server. The site only receives service marks: that the page was opened and that a file was chosen, with its size and type. The image itself and the file name are not part of them.
Which pictures work?
A photo or scan in JPG, PNG or WebP up to 30 MB with dark or colored ink on light paper. On a phone you can take the picture with the camera right from the file picker. A white unruled sheet under even light works best. Light ink on dark paper is not supported.
There is a shadow, ruled lines or noise on the paper. What should I do?
Shadows are handled by lighting correction, which is on by default. If ruled lines or noise show up, lower the sensitivity and raise the speck cleanup. A line that crosses the signature and is about as dark as the ink cannot be removed: it is better to sign a blank sheet.
Does it work with a blue stamp?
Yes. Ink is detected not only by darkness but also by color saturation, so a blue imprint on white paper separates as well as black ink. You can keep the color or recolor it.
What format and size is the result?
A PNG with a transparent background. The resolution of the original is kept: the selected area is exported pixel for pixel, and with trimming on only the signature with a small margin remains. Only pictures larger than 16 megapixels are scaled down to that limit.
Can I put the signature on a document right away?
The "Place on a document" button opens our document signing tool. The file is not passed between pages: download the PNG and upload it there as a ready signature.
Does the tool verify that a signature or stamp is genuine?
No. It only removes the background from your image. It does not verify signatures or stamps, does not create documents and gives the picture no legal force.
Is it free? Is there a watermark?
The tool is free and needs no sign-up. No watermark is added and we do not limit the number of files.
