US passport photo: the short answer
A US passport photo is a color print 2 by 2 inches (51 by 51 mm). The head, from chin to the top of the hair, measures 1 to 1 3/8 inches (25 to 35 mm). The background is plain white or off-white, the photo is no older than 6 months, and glasses are not allowed. These are the rules published by the US embassies.

What is not accepted
- Copies or scans of a photo from a driver's license or another document.
- Low quality photos from a phone or a photo booth.
- Full length photos.
- Photos that were changed with software. The State Department says a passport photo must not be digitally altered.
Because of the last rule, take the picture in front of a real white or off-white wall in even light. Then the tool only crops the frame, and the background stays close to what you shot.
How to make the photo with the widget

Frequently asked questions
How big is a US passport photo in pixels?
The passport rules give the print size: 2x2 inches. The widget makes a 600x600 pixel file, which prints at 2x2 inches at 300 pixels per inch.
Can I take a US passport photo at home?
Yes, if the photo meets the rules above. Use a real light wall, even light and no glasses. US embassies do not accept low quality phone photos, so use the main camera in good light.
Does this work for online passport renewal?
Online renewal has its own rules for the digital file. We have not checked them, so read the current instructions on travel.state.gov before you upload.
Is it the same as the US visa photo?
The print size is the same, 2x2 inches. For the DS-160 visa form you upload a digital file with its own limits; choose «US visa (DS-160) / Green Card» in the widget list for that.
