Driver's license photo online
Driver's license photo online
Upload a portrait and fit it to the frame your licensing office asks for: 35x45 mm, 2x2 inches or 3x4 cm. The tool fits the frame, the background and the file weight, and you see the result in a free preview.
How to make a driver's license photo
- Find out on the page of the office that issues your license whether you can send your own photo, and in which size.
- Upload a front-facing portrait or shoot with the camera: neutral expression, eyes open, even light.
- Pick the matching frame in the list: "United Kingdom: passport and driving licence (printed photo)" for a UK driving licence, "Schengen (any country)" for another 35x45 mm photo, "US passport, Green Card, EAD (2x2 in print)" for 2x2 inches, "Photo 3×4 cm (ID card, badge, student card)" for 3x4 cm.
- The tool crops the frame, sets the background of the chosen format and brings the pixel size and the file weight within its limit.
- Check the free preview, then download the clean file without a watermark.
Can you send your own photo? It depends on the country
- United Kingdom: yes. Online you can use your passport photo or upload a new one, and by post you send a printed photo.
- United States: licenses are issued by the states and the photo is taken at the office. The California DMV lists "Have your photo taken" among the steps of an office visit.
- Canada: licences are issued by the provinces. In Ontario you visit a ServiceOntario centre when a new photo is needed.
- Australia: licences are issued by the states. In New South Wales an online renewal reuses the photo Transport for NSW already holds.
- India: the photo and the signature are uploaded as JPEG files on the Sarathi portal, and the limits depend on the state. Check them on the upload page of your state.
We did not find a US state, a Canadian province or an Australian state whose official site accepts a photo you bring or upload for a standard license. If your office does, follow the size it gives. The tool is for licences where you hand in the photo yourself: the United Kingdom with "United Kingdom: passport and driving licence (printed photo)", and in the list also "Poland: driving licence prawo jazdy (480x615 file)", "Italy: passport, residence permit, driving licence", "Spain: TIE, DNI, passport, driving licence (32x26 mm)" and "Japan: driver's license (application photo)".
UK driving licence photo
- Online with DVLA: you can use the photo from your UK passport or upload a new one.
- By post with DVLA: a recent printed passport type photo. Do not sign the back of it.
- Northern Ireland, printed photo: 45 mm high by 35 mm wide, in colour, on a light grey or cream background, taken within the last month. Do not trim a larger photo down to this size.
- Northern Ireland, digital photo: a plain light-coloured background with no patterns, head, shoulders and upper body in the frame. There is no size rule and you should not crop the photo, it is cropped for you.
- No sunglasses or tinted glasses, and no headwear unless it is for religious or medical reasons.
DVLA pages do not give the print size in millimetres, they say "passport type", and the UK passport print is 35x45 mm: confirm the size with DVLA if you apply by post. Pick "United Kingdom: passport and driving licence (printed photo)" in the list: it gives the 35x45 mm frame on a light grey background. nidirect notes that photos printed at home are unlikely to be of a high enough quality, so order the print from a photo lab.
What a license photo usually has to show
The size and the background are set by the office that issues the license, so its page is the first thing to read. The rules below repeat in ID photo requirements from country to country.
- The face is turned straight to the camera, the expression is neutral, both eyes are open and clearly visible.
- The background is plain and light, with no objects and no shadows.
- If you wear glasses, there is no glare on the lenses and the frames do not cover the eyes. Sunglasses and tinted lenses are not accepted.
- The photo is recent and looks like you today. Beauty filters, skin smoothing and a changed face shape are not allowed.
Do not want to fiddle with it? Hand the photo to a retoucher
Automation does not fix everything: a difficult frame, a photo that matters, an old print off a scanner. Where the algorithm gives up, a person works the picture layer by layer in Photoshop, by hand.

BeforeAfter⇆- Bring back sharpness in the face and eyes
- Remove noise and artefacts without plasticising the skin
- Fix colour, contrast and a broken exposure
- Remove scratches, stains and creases from an old scan
- Return a file large enough to print
- Price per photo$10
- Turnaroundwithin 24 hours
- Deliveryto your email
- If we cannot do itmoney back
We will finish your photo by hand
A studio retoucher fixes what automation cannot: sharpness, face, colour, defects. Pay first, then simply send the photo and tell us what you need. If we cannot do it, you get your money back.

The card and the photo on it
A driver's license is usually an ID-1 card under ISO/IEC 7810: 85.60x53.98 mm, the same as a bank card. The standard describes the card and does not set the size of the photo on it, which is why the frame depends on the issuing office.
What the tool does with your picture
- Accepts JPEG, PNG, WebP, HEIC/HEIF and AVIF files of up to 20 MB, or a shot from the camera.
- Works best when the short side of the source is 900 pixels or more. Between 600 and 900 pixels you get a warning, below 600 an error in the check before processing.
- Crops the frame to the chosen format, sets its background, corrects the white balance and fits the pixel size and the JPEG weight.
- Does not retouch the face and does not redraw clothes.
Driver's license photo questions
Can I take my own driver's license photo? In the United Kingdom, yes: you can upload a new photo online or send a printed one by post. In the United States, Canada and Australia the photo is normally taken at the licensing office, for example at a California DMV office or a ServiceOntario centre, so check with your office before you prepare one.
What size is a driver's license photo? The office that issues the license sets it, so check its page first. In Northern Ireland a printed photo is 45 mm high by 35 mm wide. In the tool "United Kingdom: passport and driving licence (printed photo)" gives that 35x45 mm frame, and the list also has a 2x2 inch square and 3x4 cm.
Can I use my passport photo for a UK driving licence? Yes. When you renew or update the photo online, DVLA lets you use the photo from your UK passport or upload a new one. By post you send a recent printed passport type photo.
Do I need a photo to renew a license online in the US? Usually not: the state reuses the photo it has or asks you to come to an office for a new one. The rules differ from state to state, so read the renewal page of your DMV.
Can I take the photo with my phone? Yes. Stand in front of a plain light wall in even light, look straight at the camera and keep a neutral expression. A source with a short side of 900 pixels or more works best.
Which files can I upload? JPEG, PNG, WebP, HEIC/HEIF and AVIF, up to 20 MB. You can also shoot with the web camera or the front camera of a phone.
What background will the photo have? The one the chosen format sets: light grey for "United Kingdom: passport and driving licence (printed photo)", white for most other formats. The background is set by software, so it is best to shoot against a real plain light wall in the first place.
Does the tool retouch the face? No. It crops the frame, sets the background, corrects the white balance and fits the file weight. The face and the clothes stay as they are in your picture.
How much does it cost? Processing and the preview with a watermark are free. The clean file without a watermark is a small paid step.
