OCI photo online
Upload a portrait and get the square file an OCI card application asks for: 900x900 pixels, a JPEG of up to 200 KB, on a light background that is not white. You see the result in a free preview.
How to make an OCI photo
- Stand in front of a real plain light wall, for example cream, light grey or light blue, in even light with no shadow behind you.
- Ask another person to take a front-facing picture with your face filling most of the frame.
- Upload the file or shoot with the camera. The OCI format is preselected, it is listed as "India: OCI card".
- The tool crops the square, sets a light blue background and saves a 900x900 pixel JPEG of up to 200 KB.
- In the free preview check that the face covers about 80% of the square and nothing is cut off. Then download the clean file without a watermark and upload it to the OCI portal.
OCI photo size
The rules come from the FAQ of the OCI Services portal of the Government of India.
- The photo is square, with the height equal to the width.
- A print is at least 51x51 mm, which is 2 by 2 inches.
- The face covers about 80% of the photo.
- The background is plain and light-coloured, not white.
- The photo has no border.
The file you upload to the OCI portal
- Format: JPEG or JPG.
- Weight: no more than 200 KB.
- Pixels: a square from 200x200 to 900x900.
A phone picture is far larger than 900 pixels and far heavier than 200 KB, so the original cannot be uploaded as it is. The "India: OCI card" format crops it to a square of 900x900 pixels and keeps the JPEG within 200 KB.
Background: light, but not white
Most 2x2 inch photos are made for US documents and have a white background. The OCI rules ask for a light background that is not white, and people who reuse a US passport photo for OCI run into exactly this.
The "India: OCI card" format sets a light blue background instead of a white one. The background is set by software, so it is best to stand in front of a real light-coloured wall in the first place. The tool does not retouch the face and does not redraw clothes.
Do not want to fiddle with it? Hand the photo to a retoucher
Automation does not fix everything: a difficult frame, a photo that matters, an old print off a scanner. Where the algorithm gives up, a person works the picture layer by layer in Photoshop, by hand.

BeforeAfter⇆- Bring back sharpness in the face and eyes
- Remove noise and artefacts without plasticising the skin
- Fix colour, contrast and a broken exposure
- Remove scratches, stains and creases from an old scan
- Return a file large enough to print

We will finish your photo by hand
A studio retoucher fixes what automation cannot: sharpness, face, colour, defects. Pay first, then simply send the photo and tell us what you need. If we cannot do it, you get your money back.

OCI photo next to other Indian document photos
- OCI card: square, 200x200 to 900x900 pixels, up to 200 KB, light background that is not white. In the list: "India: OCI card".
- Regular Indian visa: square, 350x350 to 1000x1000 pixels, 10 KB to 300 KB, plain light or white background. In the list: "India (regular visa)".
- Indian e-Visa: square, 10 KB to 1 MB, plain light or white background. In the list: "India (eVISA)".
- Indian passport, printed photo: 4.5 cm by 3.5 cm, plain white background. In the list: "India: passport".
One file rarely suits two of these. A visa photo on white does not fit OCI, and a visa file of 300 KB is too heavy for the OCI portal, so make a separate file for each application.
Checklist before you upload
- Open the file properties: width and height are equal and between 200 and 900 pixels.
- The weight is 200 KB or less and the extension is .jpg or .jpeg.
- The background is one plain light colour, not white, with no shadow and no pattern.
- There is no border or frame line around the picture.
- The face takes most of the square, about 80%, and is not cut off at the top or at the chin.
OCI photo questions
What is the OCI photo size? A square of at least 51x51 mm with the face covering about 80% of it. The uploaded file is a JPEG or JPG from 200x200 to 900x900 pixels that weighs no more than 200 KB.
What background does an OCI photo need? Plain and light-coloured, but not white, and without a border.
Can the OCI photo background be white? The FAQ of the OCI Services portal says the background should not be white. The format on this page sets light blue.
What is the OCI photo size in KB? No more than 200 KB. The "India: OCI card" format keeps the file within that limit.
Is the OCI photo the same as a US passport photo? The square is the same 2 by 2 inches, but the background is not: a US passport photo is on white or off-white, and an OCI photo needs a light background that is not white.
Is the OCI photo the same as an Indian visa photo? No. A visa photo may have a white background and may weigh up to 300 KB for a regular visa. The OCI file is limited to 200 KB and 900x900 pixels, and its background must not be white.
Can I make an OCI photo with this tool? Yes. Pick "India: OCI card": it gives a 900x900 pixel square JPEG of up to 200 KB on a light blue background. Processing is automatic and acceptance of the photo is not guaranteed.
How much does it cost? Processing and the preview with a watermark are free. The clean file without a watermark is a small paid extra.
