India visa photo online
Upload a portrait and get the square JPEG that the Indian visa forms ask for: one format for the e-Visa and one for a regular visa, each within its own file weight limit. You see the result in a free preview.
How to make an India visa photo
- Take a front-facing photo without glasses against a real plain white or light wall, with both eyes open and no shadow on the face or behind you.
- Upload the file or shoot with the camera. The e-Visa square is preselected, it is listed as "India (eVISA)". For a regular visa pick "India (regular visa)".
- The tool crops the square, sets a white background and fits the JPEG to the weight limit of the chosen format.
- In the free preview check that the whole head is in the frame, from the top of the hair to the chin, and that it sits in the centre.
- Download the clean file without a watermark and upload it to the visa form.
Indian e-Visa photo
The e-Visa page of the Indian government lists these rules for the photo you upload.
- Format: JPEG.
- Weight: at least 10 KB and no more than 1 MB.
- The height and the width are equal.
- Full face, front view, eyes open, without spectacles.
- The head is in the centre of the frame and is shown in full, from the top of the hair to the bottom of the chin.
- The background is plain light-coloured or white.
- No shadows on the face or on the background, and no borders.
The page does not give a size in pixels, only the square shape and the weight.
Regular Indian visa photo
The form for a regular (sticker) visa on indianvisaonline.gov.in is stricter about the file.
- Format: JPEG.
- Weight: 10 KB to 300 KB.
- Pixels: a square from 350x350 to 1000x1000.
- Head height: 1 to 1 3/8 inches (25 to 35 mm) from the chin to the top of the head.
- Background: plain light-coloured or white.
For the printed photo that goes with a paper application, follow the size given by the Indian mission or the visa centre that takes your documents.
Which format to pick in the tool
- "India (eVISA)": a 900x900 pixel square within the 1 MB limit of the e-Visa form.
- "India (regular visa)": a 900x900 pixel square within the 300 KB limit of the regular visa form.
The second file also passes the e-Visa form, because it is lighter. The first one may be too heavy for a regular visa, so do not swap them the other way round.
Why the upload fails
- The picture is not square: a phone shot straight from the gallery is a rectangle.
- The file is heavier than the limit of the form.
- Spectacles are on, or the lenses show glare.
- A shadow falls on the wall or on one side of the face.
- The picture has a border, or the head is cut off at the top.
Do not want to fiddle with it? Hand the photo to a retoucher
Automation does not fix everything: a difficult frame, a photo that matters, an old print off a scanner. Where the algorithm gives up, a person works the picture layer by layer in Photoshop, by hand.

BeforeAfter⇆- Bring back sharpness in the face and eyes
- Remove noise and artefacts without plasticising the skin
- Fix colour, contrast and a broken exposure
- Remove scratches, stains and creases from an old scan
- Return a file large enough to print

We will finish your photo by hand
A studio retoucher fixes what automation cannot: sharpness, face, colour, defects. Pay first, then simply send the photo and tell us what you need. If we cannot do it, you get your money back.

Background: use a real wall
The visa pages ask for a plain light or white background and say nothing about a background replaced by software. India does state the rule for passports, where the photo guideline asks for photos unaltered by computer software, and a visa officer may look at an edited picture the same way. So shoot against a real white or light wall and let the tool do the square, the pixel size and the file weight. It does not retouch the face and does not redraw clothes. Processing is automatic and acceptance of the photo is not guaranteed.
A visa photo is not an OCI photo
An OCI card application also wants a square photo, but with a light background that is not white and a file of no more than 200 KB. A visa photo on a white background does not fit it, so for the OCI card pick "India: OCI card" in the list.
India visa photo questions
What size is an India e-Visa photo? A square JPEG that weighs at least 10 KB and no more than 1 MB. The e-Visa page does not give a pixel size; the format on this page saves 900x900 pixels.
What size is a regular Indian visa photo? A square JPEG from 350x350 to 1000x1000 pixels that weighs 10 KB to 300 KB, with the head measuring 1 to 1 3/8 inches (25 to 35 mm).
What is the India visa photo size in KB? For the e-Visa: 10 KB to 1 MB. For a regular visa: 10 KB to 300 KB.
What background does an India visa photo need? Plain light-coloured or white, with no shadows and no borders.
Can I wear glasses in an India visa photo? The e-Visa rules ask for a photo without spectacles, so take them off.
Can I take the photo with my phone? Yes. Stand in front of a plain white or light wall in even light and ask another person to take the picture. A source with a short side of 900 pixels or more works best.
Can I use my India visa photo for an OCI card? No. An OCI photo needs a light background that is not white and a file of up to 200 KB. Pick "India: OCI card" for it.
How much does it cost? Processing and the preview with a watermark are free. The clean file without a watermark is a small paid extra.
